Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Dean Ridings

For Deputy Sheriff Dean Ridings:

Our duty as law officers takes us to the brink of danger performing many and various duties. The marine patrol officer has no less risk than any other duty. As on the highway, the involvement in a serious collision brings with it tragedy, including death. No law officer, despite his duty, is free of risk. It is our lot.

We regret the loss of Dean, and are thankful that his partner was assisted by others who were vigilant and caring.

May Dean's family, friends, co-workers and all those who care about him be ready to reach-out to one another during the period that lies ahead.

As a retired trooper, and a Lake County (FL) deputy sheriff, I am proud to render Deputy Dean Ridings a final salute.

Cpl. Ralph D. Fiorenza (Ret.)
Pennylvania State Police

You know, I look at this website almost every single day and I never imagined the day that I would see you here. You died doing something that you loved and something that made you, and all of us, proud. I will never forget hearing your voice over the radio just minutes before saying "390, property check, Lake Anna State Park". The words "officer down" is something that I never wanted to hear come across my radio and at that minute, in my heart Dad, I knew that it was you.

I want you to know that you still are the best father I could ever ask for and I want you to know that everyday when I put on my uniform, it will be for you. Thank you for being a great dad and just so you know our time together is not over.

The best thing you could have ever taught me is how to be a great father myself. At times I am thankful that he is not old enough to remember this but at others I would have loved to hear him say your name. But dont worry, he will know what a wondeful grandfather he had.

We all love and miss you dad.

I attended the academy with Deputy Ridings son, who is also a Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Deputy. When I heard the news yesterday, I couldn't help but feel saddened for his family and my former classmate. I can't imagine what they are going through right now, but I want them to know they have many people praying for them. To Dep. Dean Ridings, may you rest in peace. Thank You for your service!
