I was shocked to learn about this senseless tragedy and how it has taken the life of four public servants and affected their families and friends forever. There are no words that can speak to the hurt those around these officers must be feeling.

I noted in Officer Hege's biography that he was a high school umpire in his spare time. That hit home for me as I am a high school and American Legion umpire as well. For me, Officer Hege is a brother in the blue and gray umpire's uniform that we both share. Umpires are a tight knit group, much like police officers, and I know his fellow umpires in the Bay Area are hurting with his passing as well as the deaths of the other officers. As I often say to younger umpires when things in a game get tough or controversial, "At this point, all we can do is keep working". I know his fellow umpires are carrying that spirit with them as they work without him.

Godspeed to Officer Hege and Sergeants Dunakin, Sakai, and Romans.

Fellow Umpire
