I did not know you personally, but I knew you. I began following this story when it first happened and said a prayer for you and your fellow officers. Although the outcome is not what I wished, you are in a better place now and I will continue to pray for your family and the families of your fallen brothers.

In death as in life, you are a hero to many. How incredible a gift that you and your family gave to four more men that they will be able to continue life through your decision to donate your organs.

Tears are shed for you from over 2300 miles away, and I hope that you will rest in peace.

Louisville (KY) Metro Police Dept.

So very tragic! Please know that all of the officers and their families are in my thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time! Stay strong!

John is now an Angel looking down upon you!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Hearts have broken upon your death, yet we will let Heaven take a great man, a hero. For now, you will be remembered not with sorrow but with the pride that we are to walk where you walked and serve what you served. Your memory will add to the weight of our shields and still we will carry them with strength, pride and honor. We have suffered a great loss and your family an even greater loss. May God bless your family and give them strength to persevere. Rest in peace Officer Hege and know that the memory of your sacrifice will be carried by our class, as we continue our training, and our prayers are with your family and fellow officers at the Oakland Police Department.

I was extremely sad to hear such horrible incident took place last week, when innocent lives were lost due to random acts of violence. I found out today that Officer John Hege will save at least 4 lives and many others. As a husband of a beautiful wife who received organ donation almost two years ago, at the brink of her death, she is able to live today because of wonderful individuals like officer Hege and his family. I can't say enough about how incredible and tremendous gift it is, to sacrifice your life for others. I can't thank you enough for your courageous decision I can however tell you that in addition to saving lives immediately, the story will influence other people to do the same, and can, and will indirectly save hundreds, thousands of lives. Thank you, from bottom of my heart. I am eternally grateful, and world is a much better place because of John Hege.

My family and I are deeply saddened by you and your partners deaths. I was very angered but also felt some relief knowing your organs were donated so 4 other people were able to live. You are a true hero and we pray for your family and the family of those 4 other officers. You gave your life for us and there is no way we could ever thank you for that.
