"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Nick & I were hired on Pueblo Police Department together, with about 6 other officers on January 8th, 2001.

We worked our first year on the streets as Watch III Officers in the Belmont & East Side Areas of Pueblo.

During that period, my experiences with Nick were nothing short of positive. In fact, they were a blast!

Nick always did what was asked of him & then some - all without any griping about it. He was always there to lend a hand, most times, when that hand was most welcome.

My wife, Melissa, also a veteran Pueblo P.D. Officer, & I have spoken about this tragedy nearly non-stop since we were notified of his death, and she simply, yet appropriately, described Nick as guy who became a cop because he WANTED to be a cop.

He wasn't some middle-aged person looking for a change, nor was he a young kid looking for direction. Nick didn't become a police officer for the pay. Nor did he seek the "Glory" or the Accolades, he often yet modestly received. Nick became a cop to help the very community in which he grew up.

Nick & I spent what little "down-time" we had on graveyards talking about the job, our spouses, & our kids. And it certainly goes without saying that Nick was a very doting father & devoted husband. My wife & I attended his Wedding, and enjoyed watching his daughter Nichole turn 1.

Leaving the Graveyard shift was bittersweet for me, as I left fellow officers like Nick to work different assignments. We'd still occasionally see each other in passing, and either wave or yell out a greeting of some kind.

Nick will be missed by those of us at the P.P.D. at a level that can't even be measured.

The citizens of Pueblo will miss Nick's tireless & relentless pursuit to do what's right, to make things right.

Most importantly, and yet most sadly, Nick's "Little Girls" will miss their daddy and have to learn to grow up without their father who loved them very much! Nick's wife Melissa will never get to grow old with Nick, and his mother Pat will no longer be able to watch her son make her proud to know that she raised one hell of a son.

Rest in Peace My Friend, Those of us who truly knew you will never forget you! The "Thin Bue Line" has just become come a lot thinner.

On behalf of my wife & family our Sincerest, Heartfelt Condolences Go Out To The Entire Heine Family.

David
