IN MEMORY OF CORPORAL COURTNEY BROOKS

I received a text message late the other night.
It said, "I'm sorry to hear about Brooks; I haven't heard from you, is everything alright".

I didn't know how to repsond because I hadn't heard a thing.
I called the metro office where Vinny answered the telephone ring.

I didn't know how to ask so I just said, "Is it true".
He answered in a somber voice, "yes". I was stunned with disbelief. I didn't know what to do.

He told me briefly what had happened. I became angry. I became sad. I wanted to scream. I wanted to cry. But all I could do is yell out Lord, why Brooks....Lord why?

I then called Rodney because I knew that they were close.
He and Brooks would have me laughing about how their kids kept them up all night as they tried to figure out who had slept the most.

He and I would argue 5:30am in the morning as a way to say hello. I am going to miss those moments more than he will ever know.

He had a sense of humor and a sarcastic way about him that was hard to understand. He was a co-worker, a friend, a fiance, a father, a son, a brother, and a policeman.

At first he was a voice on the radio on the midnight shift to me, a face I had never scene. Our first time meeting at BWI left me with the impression that "this guy is mean".

First impression can mean a lot but sometimes they are wrong. Brooks was a funny guy who spoke his mind, never bit his tongue. I began to think oh yeah we will get along.

He loved photography as well as insulting and joking with me. However, the last time we spoke he said, "take care yourself", after learning I had hurt my knee.

I saw his family today arrive and leave with pain and sorrow in their eyes. After viewing the yellow shield with Brooks picture in the middle, it dawned on me that my co-worker, my friend, the jokester, really had died.

Walking away from the shield I wiped the tears my eyes had drew. But then I heard Brooks say to me, "Hey Patt, was good is crying going to do".

"Hey look I lived a good life. I traveled, served my country and my state. God called me and said he needed while I was working on the Interstate".

"I leave a love that is everlasting to my friends, family, kids and wife to be. Although I am not able to be with them they will feel my love eternally".

"See I left you memories that you can laugh about with good humor and cheer. A guardian angel I will be year, after year, after year".

"So to the black and grays I salute you farewell. Proudly we have all served together. One thing that I won't miss is, man is that cold and the rainy weather".

"To my kids, know that daddy is watching; forever I will be. To Suzanne, know that I love you as much as you loved me".

"Far away, no; I'm not far at all. That last night,over the radio I heard angels playing their harps; then I heard God say, "Corporal Courtney Brooks, this is your final call".

He said, "You've done a fine job son but your time on earth is through. There's a new academy class starting", he embraced me in his arms and said, "this is what I need you to do......".

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you , and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy , and my burden is light."

This story is already sad enough. A young father of 3 young children life was taken on New Year's Eve. I just pray this wasn't a drunk driver who took Corporal Brooks life. May his children and family find some comfort knowing that Corporal Brooks is a true hero.

My deepest sympathy and prayers goes out to your family and friends. There are no words good enough to say, to express the sadness I feel in my heart for all they are going through. As a citizen of Baltimore City,I thank you for your dedication and your service to all of us that reside here. As I travel past that spot where you so tragically were struck, all the time, as I drive on that road going to and from work several times each week. I honor you for your service to us citizens. I honor you for your obvious love of your profession. AS a dispatcher, my heart aches, as I know we all pray for our officers safe return after their shifts. Your family and friends are in my prayers, along with your entire department too. Our department lost one of our own in 2007, also being struck by a vehicle. I know that angel wings gently carried you high into the heavens above, to rest 10-4 forever more, in the loving arms of God. "A Hero does not become a Hero by their death, but by how they lived their life." You will not be forgotten! God Bless!

I have been with the MdTA for nearly 13 years now. I personally worked with Officer Brooks since his graduation from the academy. His personality to inject humor into any situation, no matter how stressful, always made it easier to work in a high stress environment. His love of life, his fiancee, his children, the police department that he is a part of, and his friends and family were the biggest thing that I could always count on. So many times I could call him with any problem, professional or personal, and I know he would always be there for me, or any other person in my life.

Christmas Day 2000 we had a 'family' get together with games, movies, conversation, and just plain people who worked within our law enforcement community. This is our fondest memory of Courtney. This was at his truest self....sitting with us on a holiday, enjoying his friends that were his family as well.

God Bless you Courtney, you will be in my thoughts always.

Love and miss you, my brother.

The Badge

I come in many sizes,
In many shapes I'm made;
I'm on a shirt or in a case,
Or by other means displayed.

I've stood for many things, you know,
Throughout my many years;
I've reflected hero's faces,
And been wet with widow's tears.

I've been scratched and sometimes tarnished,
I've been repaired along the line;
But with steadfast duty as my brush,
I have kept my honor's shine.

I tell the world of my intent,
And all who see me know,
That whoever wears me, knows the way
That their life has to go.

I'm the symbol that they call the "badge,"
I'm an emblem held in awe;
And to those who try to live by right,
I represent the law.

But no matter what I'm made of -
Be it silver, tin, or gold,
I stand for things the same today
As I did in days of old.
