Tonight I went by the scene and looked at the memorial that continues to grow out there. A little boy and little girl, no more than five or six years old, came up to a group of officers that I was standing with and gave each of us a giant hug. You are a hero to people young and old, sworn and civilian, and we're all going to miss you. God bless.

I just sat here & read all 12 pages of reflections while crying. I did not know Officer Cortez but I grew up in the Phoenix area and as the wife of an LEO, this kind of senseless violence devastates me. My thoughts & prayers go out to his wife, his 2 boys, his entire family & all his co-workers & friends. I hope that the community and his dept will be there for them for years to come. I know firsthand how hard it is to lose someone you care about. One of our own, Officer Matthew Pavelka (E.O.W. 11-15-03) was killed in the same way, a routine call, and even now all these years later it is still as raw & heartwrenching as it was the day it happened. God Bless you Officer Cortez... you were a brave man and a true hero who left this world much too soon...

My heart goes out to the family, friends and co-workers of Officer Cortez. As a fellow officer in the Phoenix valley, it hits close to home how sensless violence can strike. The valley is diminshed by the loss of of brother, but we can all take some solice in knowing that Officer Cortez has moved on to a better place, and is patrolling his beat in heaven, watching down on thhose of us left to cover the streets. We've lost a Hero, but gained a guardian angel.
Via con dios brother!

To Officer Cortez, his family and the Phoenix PD family. In protecting good from evil you stared satan in the face and won. You were taken by evil but will live eternally with the Lord. Your being taken too soon from your wife, sons, friends, family and coworkers was not in vain as the evil that wrought havoc that day is now in a place where they can no longer harm the innocent. May they reap that which they sew. God Bless you and your family in this time of sadness.

Go in Peace.

Officer Cortez,

I never met you but knowing what you did and how you did it makes me feel like we could of walked into the same room and became "partners". Reading what took place makes me get the chills and my eyes start to water. Because only a TRUE HERO walks into the line of danger and takes care of business. The unfortunate part of this situation is that you are no longer here with us, but that is only temporary, you now watch us from above. Brother rest easy, you did your job and you did it without any hesitation. Protect us as we attempt to protect everyone from what you stopped that terrible day.

To the family, I pray for you and everyone to find the strength to get through this. The two young sons will always have the support of the Law Enforcement Community anywhere they go, especially from the Phoenix Police Departement that I am certain of. To Mrs. Cortez, from reading about "George" you certainly were blessed to be with a MAN of his caliber, dedication to his FAMILY and his PROFESSION.

May God guide you through this rough and difficult road to come.

I am very saddened to read about this loss. From his picture, he looks like he enjoyed life and was proud to wear that uniform. We all answer calls we never would imagine could lead to a disaster or heartbreak. A forgery call isn't one of those incidents you think about turning deadly. But you never really know what is in store for you. Yet, this Officer answered that call knowing full well that every call is unpredictable. He made the ultimate sacrifice doing his duty. May God give him the peace he very much deserves and may He bless his family, friends, and his fellow officers. There is always a reason for everything and only God knows why. That's why we have to leave it to Him in the end. God bless you, Officer Cortez.
