Rest in peace, my brother. You are gone but will NEVER be forgotten. May God wrap his arms of love and comfort around your family, friends, and fellow officers during this most difficult time. You are now in a much better and safe place. "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

My Husband was {dec'd '06} Retired Michigan State Police Capt. John K. Cosgrove, retired after 41 plus years. I am the great grandmother of Robert's daughter, Kailey who loves her daddy soooo much. Robert loved Kailey soooo much as well. To be a little 3 year old without a daddy is very difficult for anyone to imagine. My husband always said a domestic violence call is the Most dangerous call for an officer to respond to. Robert's actions to protect a family from harm is the most heroic action an offricer can take. To be a police officer's mother or wife takes a lot of strong fortitude and prayer. In all the years of John's time in the department of MSP this is one of the most heroic sacrifices in any department. I am so sorry! Elly Cosgrove, 122 East Bay Blvd. S., Traverse City, MI 49686

My deepest thoughts go to your family, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time. You did nothing wrong. In fact, you did the tactically-correct thing to do in a situation that most veteran officers have found themselves in at some point. You were ambushed, and for that, you were at such a disadvantage, that you (or any other offier) stood little chance of winning. Your death is a tragedy, and you did not die in vein. Your heroic actions inspire all of your brothers in blue, and we'll proudly continue the fight in your honor. Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice to community, state, and country!

Salute

The policeman stood and faced his God,which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?
The policeman squared his shoulders and said.
"No, I guess I ain't because those of us who carry a badge can't always be a Saint."
I've had to work most Sundays
and at times my talk is rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep...
though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got to steep.
And I never passed a cry for help
though at times I shook with fear,
and sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much, but if you don't...I'll understand"
There was a silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman.
You've borne you burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.
You've done your time in Hell"
