Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Joshua Everett Norris

Josh,
Not only were you a friend, but you chose to become my brother in arms. Your sacrifice serves as the ultimate commitment that we as law enforcement can give. You will never be forgotten. I am honored to have known you. Rest well my brother for you time in hell is through.

I truly hope it is some small comfort for your family and friends and your many many brothers and sisters to know that hearts are heavy across the country on this day. Your shift may be over, but thousands of officers will start theirs a lil bit sadder, a lil more carefully, and a whole lot prouder. Your short tour of duty and your long sacrifice are noted and will be remembered. Thank You

A Policeman's Prayer

Lord, I ask for courage;
Courage to face and conquer my own fears...
Courage to take me where others will not go.
I ask for strength;
Strength of body to protect others...
Strength of spirit to lead others.
I ask dedication;
Dedication to my job to do it well...
Dedication to my community to keep it safe.
Give me, Lord, concern;
For all those who trust me...
And compassion for those who need me
And, please, Lord, through it all; be at my side.

It's always so sad to hear about losing someone from the "Brotherhood", and especially so close to home. Our dedication and pride brings us places we never expected to be. The Lord was with you that night, and he needs you now. My heart and prayers go out to your family, friends and loved ones. Though we never crossed paths you are my brother and will be missed by many. Rest In Peace Deputy Norris.

Cop on the Take

First he takes the oath.

Now look at all he takes.

He takes it in stride when people call him pig.

He takes time to stop and talk to children.

He takes your verbal abuse while giving you a ticket you really deserved.

He takes on creeps you would be afraid to even look at.

He takes time away from his family to keep you safe.

He takes your injured child to the hospital.

He takes the graveyard shift without complaint because it's his turn.

He takes his life into his hands daily.

He takes you home when your car breaks down.

He takes time to explain why both your headlights have to work.

He takes the job no one else wants--telling you a loved one has died.

He takes criminals to jail.

He takes in sights that would make you cry.

Sometimes he cries too, but he takes it anyway because someone has to.

If he is lucky, he takes retirement.

He takes memories to bed each night that you couldn't bear for even one day.

Sometimes, he takes a bullet.

And yes, occasionally he may take a free cup of coffee.

Then one day he pays for all he has taken, and God takes him.

Please remember that the "He" in all this represents all police officers, both men and women who have served and are serving our cities and their citizens we have all sworn to protect.

Blessed are the peace keepers!

My deepest sympothy to you, your family, your fiance, your friends and your department. I don't know you, but we have walked the same streets. Dep. J. Norris you only had a very short time on the tough streets we call hell and our job while the public calls them safe and free. I remember back when I was a rookie. I feel horible that a good deputy like you was taken so soon. I want you to meet up with to very good and experienced officer up in heaven. If you run into Dep. Frank Fabiano #147, he was one of the FTO's for our department and a great man. He knows alot. Protect the streets of heaven and I hope that someday I will be your rookie and walk those streets side by side with you.
God bless brother and my you watch all of our sixes down hear. You will be missed.

A warrior must do the right thing each and every time, even if it means death. For, a warrior would rather die in honor than live a single day as a coward.

I AM AT A LOSS FOR WORDS. I WAS JUST GETTING TO KNOW YOU. WE SPOKE ONLY A LITTLE, BUT YOU LISTENED TO EVERY WORD. I LISTENED AS YOUR PEERS JOKED ABOUT YOUR AGE AND SIZE AND WATCHED AS YOU STOOD YOUR GROUND AND PERFORMED LIKE A VETERAN. I WAS IMPRESSED WITH YOUR WORK AND INSPIRED BY YOUR DEDICATION. YOUR WERE ALWAYS SMILING AND SEEMED TO INSPIRE YOUR FELLOW DEPUTIES. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU AND AM FOREVER GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SACRIFICE. I AM SORRY THAT YOUR TIME WAS CUT SHORT WITH THE DEPARTMENT BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE YOU PROGRESS AS A PERSON AND POLICEMAN, BUT YOUR BRAVERY IS ENOUGH. REST IN PEACE, BROTHER.
TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY I OFFER MY SUPPORT AND FRIENDSHIP FOREVER. PLEASE FIND COMFORT IN KNOWING THAT HIS MEMORY WILL BE CHERISHED FOREVER.

Josh,

Though we have never met, I'm sure it would only have been a matter of time working in the same area. I wasn't on duty at the time but I heard about the tragedy through co-workers who were and on the scene. It hit close to home when I heard the horrible news. It takes a special and brave somebody to do the job you've done. I would like to thank you for serving and protecting me and the rest of the citizens of Jefferson Parish. My heart goes out to you and your loved ones. Please watch over us and all those who serve and protect. May God bless you and your family and thank you once again.

To Deputy Norris from your brothers and sisters with the Criminal Investigations Divisions at the Gretna Police Department. We are saddened by this senseless tragedy, but please know that you have done your time in "hell" and can now walk a "beat" in peace. Each and every one of us know that our future can hold the same fate, but it's comforting to know the bond that is held within this brotherhood, and knowing what we mean to each other as law enforcement. God give your family and friends the strength that is needed to carry on, and God Bless You!!!

My deepest thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Norris' fiancee', family, friends and co-workers. I was married to Alabama State Trooper Brian Nichols EOW 2/17/2002 and I am now married to Washington County Deputy Sheriff Aaron Carpenter. All of your COPS family is here for you and hurting for you. We all became a family when our loved ones became police officers and now we have even a stronger bond when one of our family members go down. We are here for you to help you along this journey you now have joined with us. God bless you all.
