Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Joshua Everett Norris

My dear Josh,

You went out on the streets thinking you were going to change the world. You truly have. I will forever remember your smile, and your willingness to take what ever jokes came your way. All to gain the respect of your fellow officers. You were taken from us too soon, but will be forever in our hearts. Thank you for touching my life in such a special way.
You are in my thoughts and prayers always,
Renee'

It is always sad to hear of one of our own dying in the line of duty, but when it is a officer just starting his dedicated career at such a young age, it is always harder for me and more disturbing. God bless you and although not known me, you will be remembered....

First, I am so very sorry for all
of you at this sad, very sad time.
My husband is a coropral with the PA State Police. He just stopped home for a sec. while working tonight and I was telling him about what had happened to your Josh. He had his vest on an showed me the spot under the arm where there is no protection. As he was showing me this, his pager went off and he was called to a house with shots fired. I told him to keep his arms down ... - People are crazy and insane. Your Josh was so young - It makes me so very upset. And to know that he had just asked his girlfriend to marry him. My heart goes out to all of you, along with my prayers.
I am so very, very sorry.

I would like to send my heartfelt sorrow to the family of Joshua. It takes a special kind of person to do the job we do, and Joshua, even though I did not know him, Joshua is a BROTHER of mine. To Joshua's brothers, "Keep up the good fight".

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

As a 24 year member of the Law Enforcement family, I have attended many services for lost brothers; never for one so young. They walk a beat of concrete and stone,
They drive through the city in a car, alone.
They swallow their pride, their prejudice, their grief,
They deal with all kinds, from preacher to thief.

Sometimes they get weary, from fighting this fight,
To punish the wrong and defend the right.
Defending a sacred creed and code,
Of freedom and justice, they bear the full load.

You don't ever see them for what's deep inside,
The pain, the anger, or many tears they've cried.
For you, for me, and others in fear,
Seldom a "Thank You", do they ever hear.

If you could look at their heart, just once,
You would see,
Their own life is the gift given to you and me.

We are praying for you. Our family is so sorry for your tremendous loss. Joshua was so young and full of promise. Rest assured God will reunite you with Joshua one day. Stay strong until then.....
