Paul,
I'm not good at good bye but until we meet again. Paul Habelt or Sgt. Habelt as I knew him was my Sgt. when I was a jailer at the Henderson Co. Sheriffs Dept from 1996-1999. When I started as a jailer I was a know it all 22 year old kid whom just came over from TDC. Paul would call me in his office at times and you could say help me understand how to become a better person and officer. When I became Jailer of the year I credited two people in helping me along the way. Paul Habelt and Eric Ward. So to make a long story short, for those who didn't know Paul you really did miss out of knowing a great man who would take the time and efforts to help you better yourself. It has made me a better man knowing him. I would like to say this to all that did know him and his family. As I too mourn of the passing of a great, great friend I do realize that the lessons in life he has taught each of us will not be forgotten and that he is in a better place. Rest in peace Paul and thank you for all you have taught us all.

My prayers are with the family of Deputy Habelt. It is a heartfelt tragedy that he served the public for as long as he did to have his life taken so needlessly. God bless you for sharing him with the public for he served the people well.

What can I say, there are no words to express how this loss makes all of us who knew Paul feel. I worked with Paul when I was a Deputy for Henderson County, I will never forget that deep toned laugh, the picture reminds me of. Paul was always so professional and yet had a great since of humor. I am proud to know that thru Jesus, I will hear that laugh again some day. God Speed....You will never be forgotten.

I am also Treasurer for Blue Knights Arkansas 1 Chapter. Our Members and their familie all send our prayers to the Habelt family. Such a loss is hard to understand but he died as a hero doing his duty to help others. For an officer this is a goal, if death is near do your best for others then go and prepare a place for others to follow.
GOD Bless his family.

Anytime another is killed in the line of duty in this field especially so close to home, it feels like a family member has been lost. Although I never personally knew Deputy Habelt, my heart and prayers go out to his friends and family. Paul, rest in peace my brother.

Tragic and Overwhelming. That is what this experience has been. Paul was a wonderful person to many others other than just myself. I did not get the chance to work with him through law enforcement like my mother, brother and the rest of our extended family, but he guided me through my first year as a journalist. We are much appreciative of those who have expressed their sympathies. I would like to give thanks to all the deputies and everyone else who has swarmed the household to make sure we were okay, knowing you too have heavy hearts. You have shown what family really is. Paul will live in our hearts forever.

anyone who knew inv paul steven habelt knows what a truly wonderful person he was. he was very dedicated not only to the department but the officers of the henderson co so as well. paul was a leader to some and a father figure to others. it did not matter what it was he was always there for assistance in any way. it was his duty to assist the officers at the domestic disturbance on 5/17/2007 that took his life. not only is the family dealing with this senseless tragady, the the dept and the officers on the scene when it happened as well. i keep asking myself over and over again "why". at the candlelight vigil tonight in payne springs, i learned i would never know why my husband was taken away from us so early in his life. i knew when two officers came walking hurridly up my front steps, it was not good. when i saw the look on sgt jim langford's face i heard what i didn't wanted to hear. i have had tremdous support from the dept, the officers who worked so close to him and the neighbors in the community. i could never thank them enough. paul and i have only been married since oct 2005, but i have learned that a short time with him was the most wonderful time of my life than not knowing him at all. i will miss him dearly and i will cry for him. i know he is watching over me and the family as well as the officers he left behind. he was and still remains the love of my life. there will be a day when we will be reunited again and will contine our life together. i love you dearly sweetheart and will see you again.

your loving wife
