Reflections for Sergeant Nicholas G. Sottile

BEING NEW TO THIS PROFESSION, I HAVE ALWAYS LOOKED UP TO THE SENIOR TROOPERS. I DID NOT HAVE THE PLEASURE OF MEETING YOU, BUT I FEEL AS IF I HAVE KNOWN YOU FOR EVER AS ONE OF FLORIDA'S FINEST. I WILL FOREVER BE GRATEFUL FOR THE LEGACY AND STANDARD YOU HAVE SET FOR THE REST. I KNOW I WILL ALWAYS BE ABLE TO LOOK UP TO A SENIOR TROOPER NO MATTER WHERE I AM ON PATROL. REST IN PEACE, I WILL CONTINUE THIS SHIFT AND KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE WATCHING.

I do not need a special day
To bring you to my mind.
The days I do not think of you
Are very hard to find.
Each morning when I awake
I know that you are gone.
And no one knows the heartache
As I try to carry on.
My heart still aches with sadness
And secret tears still flow.
What is meant to lose you
No one will ever know.
My thoughts are always with you,
Your place no one can fill.
In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
There will always be a heartache,
And often a silent tear.
But alwasys a precious memory
Of the days when you were here.
If tears could make a staircase,
And heartaches make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven
And bring you home again.
I hold you close within my heart,
And there you will remain,
To walk with me throughout life
Until we meet again.

Trooper Sottile,
My husband, Lake County Deputy Wayne Koester, was killed on February 9, 2005. As God's eyes fell upon Wayne, they to, have fallen upon you, for He has chosen another beautiful, strong and brave soul to guard his kingdom. As Wayne continues to guide us, may you keep a gentle hand on your family and give them the strength they need to get through the tough road ahead.

Mrs. Sottile and family,
I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. I too have walked the path that has been chosen for you. As you are experiencing it now, it is sometimes a rough path, where at times it seems like it is full of many hills to climb and rocks to stumble upon. But, you can make it. I was given some advice once to take everything one step at a time. One step became two, and two became four. That's the only advice I can give to you is to take it one step at a time. Your friends, extended family in law enforcement and your community will always be there to lend a hand when that hill gets a little too steep. This site was also a comfort to me. It is not meant to cause painful memories but to honor our husbands for their bravery. I find comfort when I read the thoughts everyone leaves. I know he was loved and respected by everyone he met and to let others know what a wonderful husband and friend he was. I know your husband shares the same qualities as mine. I know that if given another chance, they would do the same job again and again. A job, so few are able and have the courage to do. They are a special breed of men and there are very few like them. I feel very honored to have shared a part of his life, a life of a true hero in every sense of the word. Always remember how much your husband loves you. Don't be afraid to call on your family and friends when you just don't fell like getting out of bed. That is where your support comes from. You and the children will find your strength in each other and in the love you and your husband shared. Always remember, he is in your heart whenever you need to talk to him.

For all those times you stood by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I'll be forever thankful baby
You're the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You're the one who saw me through through it all

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly
You touched my hand I could touch the sky
I lost my faith, you gave it back to me
You said no star was out of reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I'm grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don't know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You've been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'coz you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

I'm everything I am
Because you loved me

We are all saddened to hear of Nick's passing under such tragic circumstances.
I remember the good times we had in Miami as young rookie troopers; Nick, Ed, Brian, and the other guys in his district. There were a lot of laughs both on, and off duty, as we were a pretty tight bunch of guys who cared about each other and found time to socialize off the job.
Man, how time flys by...
To Elizabeth, kids, and the rest of Nick's extended family: know that Nick was a friend to many and gave the untimate sacrifice to help make the world a better place.
He is sorely missed, but will never be forgotten. We'll catch you down the road Brother.
