“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

I've known Matt for the 8 years I've worked at the Sheriff's Office and was one of the kindest person I know. He never complained about taking a call no matter how many he had already worked that day. Matt was never rude or gave attitude to any dispatcher and I can honestly say I don't know anyone that ever had a bad thing to say about him. He was extremely polite to everyone he encountered and always helped out in the community. I was one of many dispatchers working when the shootings occurred and it's always difficult no matter who it may have been that was shot but since it was a good friend made it even more difficult. My heart goes out to his wife and kids. This is a huge loss not only to our agency but to all his family and friends. We will greatly miss Matt and his beloved partner Diogi.

If you are able save them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for places they can no longer go, be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always, take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own, And in time when men decide and feel safe to call the streets insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind. We will see you in Elysium..

My heart hurts every time I hear of an officer who has fallen while serving and protecting citizens like me. I pray they catch the guy who did this swiftly without anyone else being harmed.

Deputy Williams and Diogi's service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
