Reflections for Captain Octavio Rafael "Ox" Gonzalez

R.I.P. Captain Octavio Gonzalez.

June 20, 2006

I have known “OX” for close to eleven years, and learned of his life through his actions. In these times many will say, “tell me how he died”, but in this case I will tell you how he lived. His is a life story of service, service to his family, service to the St. John Sheriff’s Office, service to his country and service to his god.

We look up to persons such as “OX”, whose life work is service; we hold them up as examples, and they earn our deepest admiration and respect because of the actions they purposefully take in the name of service.

They are the ones who say, yes, I am ready without knowing when, who say, yes, I will go, without knowing where, who say, yes, I do, without always knowing why.

It is the rare quality of those who go forward without looking back and without asking what price, who show us the true meaning of courage, of devotion, and of sacrifice. It is the legacy “OX” leaves us that his was a life lived to the full measure of those ideals.

Ox, we spoke only days before this all happened and now it seems unimaginalble. We spoke of survalliance, somthing you know something about. I had not spoken to you for months previous, If I had only known It would be the last time I said goodbye.
Your knowlegde and profesionalism has been left in the men of your command.
I thank you for training them so well and your family should be proud of your accomploishments and legacy you leave behind.
You will be greatly missed and dearly remembered.

Although I did not know Capt.Gonzalez very much I knew that he was a great officer, an excellent leader, and a loving husband and father. It is my regret to never have had the chance to work with Capt. Gonzalez, but from hearing stories about him it would have been a great experience,I'm sure. My sympathy goes out to his family and freinds.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

Ox, we met along time ago... we worked cases together, moved furniture together, and put alot of bad guys in jail together while I was still with J.P. I will never get used to seeing a COP in a coffin. That should never be... you were a true COP, not just another uniform. Your family should know that you were a great one.... Its been a few months since we have talked but you will never be forgotten. As I type this I cry for all of our brothers that have made the ultimate sacrifice. Keep an eye on us DUDE, because we will be out on the streets again, chasing the bad guys, and putting them in jail once again. My prayers are with you and your family through this difficult time and forever.. you no longer need to watch your six bro" you are in good company!!!! Rest in peace my friend, rest in peace,
