Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Corporal Scott Lee Severns

Our Father who art in Heaven
In a few minutes I will assume my daily beat.
Facing the unknown but being closer to Thee than ever before.
Hallowed be Thy name
Even in the face of death and crime, Thou art everywhere to guide me.
I will fear no evil.
Thy rod and Thy staff comfort me.
Thy will be done
Thy will, not mine shall be done.
Do not let me be selfish.
O Lord, if you choose to take me, let me die as a man in order that another man may live.
On earth as it is in Heaven
Let me be a guide here on earth to those who are misguided and lost.
Help me to help those who are in need of help in order that we all may be worthy of Thy Kingdom in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
Especially those who live in poverty and misery
And forgive us our trespasses
I am a sinner. O Lord let me never forget that I am no better than my fellow men.
Let me never forget that by Thy grace I am on the right side of the law.
As we forgive those who trespass against us
Forgive those who despise me and the uniform which represents the law and order.
Forgive them for they do not know better.
I have forgiven them.
Lead us not into temptation
Make me strong for I am only human.
Deliver me from hate and jealousy and from wanting something I should not have in your eyes.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and glory
Let me be no judge or jury.
Let me be impartial.
Let me be just and fair.
Forever and ever, Amen.

My God be with you family and give them peace in this diffcult time.

To Scott's family, and especially his father, Dennis, whom I worked with while we were both SBPD officers, my heart felt condolences. I had the privilage of being on the SBPD for five years with Scott before retiring. Scott was an excellent officer and continued his family tradition of serving the city of South Bend.
He will be missed by his family, friends and fellow officers, both current and retired. May God take care of him now, as he took care of others while he was with us.

HERO. Rest in peace, Scott.... rest in peace. Our thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences are with your family and friends.

I remember reading a reflection awhile back about another officer. The circumstances were nearly identical to yours. My first thought then was that the officer was a hero. You, too, are a hero. Your bravery to protect your friend will never be forgotten. It takes a special, strong and brave person to be a law enforcement officer. God bless all of you, living and gone from this earth. Peace be with you all.

They are with us always

A cycle of life is going on. We have lossed a member of the Law Enforcement family, Cpl. Scott Severns.

It seems like when things like this happen we look back on our own life. We go back and think of those who have passed before, memories flood us at times, good & bad, happy & sad. We think of how things have changed throughout our life. We think of jobs we have held, our childhood and times at school. We think of friends and family. We think of how much people have changed, how much children have grown.

Then we turn to the future and think of what life will be like without the ones that have passed. It has happened before and we adjusted as we will with this passing. We think of the coming year the holidays that will be different, and how our lives will be different.

Then we realize that only the physical person has left us.

We may never be able to hold, kiss, hug, or touch them again, but they have not really left us. They are still around. They are alive in our minds and our hearts. They are alive in our memories. They never really pass they stay on with us each of us. Their physical bodies limited them to being only in one place at one time, but now they can be with each of us no matter where we are, no matter what time of the day it is.

They are with us always, and that fact we must remember always.

God speed Corporal Severns. The New York State Police recently lost one of the best Troopers in the Division of State Police to gunfire. Like you, he was able to return fire and injure his assailants with both being apprehended. Rest in peace.

Reality

Imagine how our world would be
If every police officer quit
Turned in their gun, turned in their badge,
Just finally had enough of it.

No respect, no loyalty,
No appreciation of all they do,
They’d give their lives for all of us,
These wonderful officers of “Blue”.

Kicked at, spit on,
Punched, stabbed and shot,
Everyday assaults on officers,
Done…without thinking a second thought!

Our laws are in favor of criminals,
There’s always some loophole in their case,
Out again to commit more crimes and murders
…creates pain, that we, the family and friends
…in time will never erase.

Why should they do it?
Why take the risk?
Why put their life on the line?
Subject their loved ones to endless suffering,
When their precious life is lost while fighting crime.

More murders, more kidnappings, more robberies and rapes,
Just to mention a few,
Please ask yourself how life would be,
If there were NO officers in Blue!

Would you do it? Could you do it?
And for how many…would YOU give it all?
Rewards are a 21 gun salute, a Medal of Honor,
And your name gets added to the Wall.

Think about it. Why are they here?
And why do some hate them so?
Because they enforce the laws that put convicts and murderers
In jail serving time, or on “Death Row”.

All give some and some give all,
It’s a risk they chose to take:
To put their heart and soul in it,
To put their lives at stake.

So, please take a moment,
Please give it deep thought,
Think of what “you can do”…

To help show respect,
To help follow the laws,
So we’d quit losing our Heroes in Blue!

Scott,

You gave your life the way you lived it... By protecting others and not putting yourself first. Your bravery and heroism can not be questioned, as well as your dedication to the community, your friends and fellow officers.
It was a plessure to have known you, I hope someday I gain the respect, show the courage, and touch the lives of others the way you did in your life.
Rest in peace and please watch over all of us, as so many have said before your watch is done, you are now patroling the streets of heaven, we will take over from here.

Our Greatest Fear
Yet once again the Thin Blue Line is diminished,
an officer’s final tour of duty is finished.
"Officer down", it’s our greatest fear,
and once again, I hold back a tear.
They patrol in the state, city, county and town,
in uniforms colored white, green, blue and brown.
The shape of their badges may vary,
but it’s a symbol that they all, proudly carry.
They leave for work with a kiss goodbye,
but some don’t come home, no matter how hard they try.
To uphold the law is the job that they pick,
with such high aspirations, why must some die so quick?
They leave behind loved ones, family and friends,
after their lives have met tragic ends.
Some die in crashes, others hearts not too stout,
too many have been lost when gunshots ring out.
Our Heavenly Father has called them home,
no more these dark streets do they roam.
Through trial and error they have given their best,
please Lord, now grant them eternal rest.
Yet once again the Thin Blue Line is diminished,
an officer’s final tour of duty is finished.
" Officer down", it’s our greatest fear,
and once again I hold back a tear.
