Scott - You served well and showed others the meaning of the word "courage". Your example will live forever in our hearts.
My heart goes out to your father Denny, with whom I served my police career and the other members of your family.
May God Bless You, Scott and you find Peace in Heaven.

Again, tragedy has darkened the doorstep of our community. Our brotherhood of police and firemen know more than anyone that each day may be our last. We can only hope that if we die this day, we may do so knowing that we have done our best for others and shown what true honor and courage are. Scott Severns's death has come far too early, and his fellow brothers in both services, myself included, grieve for him and pray for his family in their hour of need. If there is any light in this dark time, though, it is that Scott has proven of himself what many of us only say we could do. He has proven himself honarable, courageous, and above all - a hero. Thank you, Scott, for your service and selfless sacrifice for others. May God bless you, your family, and your many friends. Goodbye, brother.

"Sev's Final Inspection"

Severns stood and faced his God.
Which must always come to pass.
Sev hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

Step forward now, Corporal.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?

Sev squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know that I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I've never expected or had too much,
But if you don't...I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod
As Sev waited quiety,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, Corporal Scott Severns.
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

"Of the 100 who make it, only 1 is a Warrior." Sev-Dog you are a Warrior, you did it Right! I'll see you again.

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The patrolman stood before his god,
which must always come to pass.
He hopes his boots were shining,
as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now patrolman,
how shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek,
to my church been true"?

The patrolman squared his shoulders,
and said "No , Sir, I ain't,
because them that carry badges,
don't always act like saints."

"I had to work most Sundays,
and my language I know was rough,
and sometimes, Sir, I've been violent,
because the streets are awful rough."

"But I never took a single dime,
that wasn't mine to keep,
though I worked a bunch of extra jobs,
when the bills just got too deep."

"And I never passed a cry for help,
though sometimes I shook with fear,
and sometimes, Sir, forgive me,
I cried unmanly tears."

"I know I don't deserve a place
among the gentle people that I served-
they never wanted me around
but when they were scared or hurt."

"If you have a place for me,
it don't have to be real grand,
I never expected much or had too much,
but if you don't , I'll understand."

There was silence then at the throne
where the saints had often throd,
as the patrolman waited patiently,
for the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now patrolman,
you've carried your burden well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets-
You've done your time in hell"

Scott, you will be missed dearly you were a great guy!

There is not enough time to describe what type of person Scott is. I never met a harder working person in all my life. Scott started work every morning with his bagle and peanut butter. From that point on he was 150% all about work until late at night. Scott and allways be 100% cop. It is a privalidge for me to work with Scott and he will be deeply missed by myself and my family.

When the news came to us here in Fishers, IN. that Scott had been shot, my heart stopped for a moment. In that specific moment I instantly prayed for him. I prayed for his family and for you, his police family. My mind began to race and I thought "Oh, Dear God...Not Again"! Then we got the news....Corporal Scott Severns did not win this battle. Again, my heart stopped for a moment. In that specific moment I reflected on South Bend and living there for many years. It is amazing what the South Bend Police Department has gone through in the past few years.

It is time to be the strong brotherhood that you are. Lean on each other, stand tall and proud! Hold your head high!

Corporal Scott Severns stood tall and proud, he did what came natural to him....even off duty he stood between crime and a citizen. He is a true hero!

May God be with you, Scott.

Rest in peace.

As a neighbor I saw Scott on more leisurely terms. Just last weekend my wife, my daughter and I were out in the front yard and it was a simple wave hello from a couple doors down that acknowledged our shared appreciation for the warmer weather. Better weather would allow us to run into each other more frequently as Scott would keep fit by regularly jogging and walking his dog. He’d stop by the end of the drive, if only for a moment, and exchange a thought or two. He always offered a smile and a kind word. My family will miss him.

"People live life with the intent to arrive at the end in a pretty and well preserved package. Police officers skid on broadside, arrive thouroghly used up, and loudly proclaiming 'Wow, What a ride!'" Unknown

While I never had the privilege of meeting Scott, I do remember his father; a kind man and a quality police officer. As Scott was a third generation officer, I'm sure he was of the same fine caliber.

My heart aches for Scott's family, his friends, and his brothers and sisters in law enforcement; for cops, the particular pain of losing a fellow officer is one that cannot be easily described and is not shared by those outside the thin blue line.

Rest in peace, Scott. You have joined Randy, Paul, and many others who made the ultimate sacrifice.
