To the family and friends of Deputy Bassett, I cannont find the words to ease your pain, and not sure there are any at all. Please know that as time goes on the void will always be there, but you will get stronger. Keep his memory close to your hearts and never forget the times you once shared, for you will meet him again when the time is yours. Talk to Shad because he will always be listening and watching over you. Ordinary citizens will never fully understand why cops choose their profession. But we see it when the community pours out with grief and gratitude. We have lost another Hero. God Speed

I’ve been away from my office for a few days only to find so many of my brothers have fallen. I pray your family and friends will find strength and comfort in the reflections left by your extended family. May your spirit have a joyous homecoming and may you enjoy your eternal resting place “High on the mountain”.

Another Brother has lost his life serving the community and citizens he vowed to protect. Although he is no longer with us physically his spirit and sould will never be forgotten. Like the heros that came before him and the heros who will almost surely come after him...now you can walk the streets of heaven and be a peace maker for all time. We will continue the watch here on earth until our time has also come.

Rest easy Brother, we have the night watch now.

To Shad's family, friends, and co-workers...be there and be strong for each other. Although time will heal the wounds the hurt will never completely go, but there is strength in numbers.

God Interviews A Cop

The Cop stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, Cop.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you alway turned the other cheek?
To my Church, have you been true?"

The Cop squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
Can't always be a Saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was rough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't...I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne
Where the Saints had often trod.
As the Cop waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, Cop,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.

“When God made Peace Officers….”

When the lord was creating Peace Officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”

And the Lord said, Have you read the spec on this order? A Peace Officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn’t touch, and not wrinkle their uniform.

They have to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day.

They have to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half- eaten meals. And they have to have six pairs of hands.

The angel shook her head slowly and said, “Six pairs of hands….No Way.”

“It’s not the hands that are causing me the problems,” said the Lord, “It’s the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have.”

That’s on the standard model? asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, “May I see what’s in there sir?” (When they already know and wishes they had taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of their head for their partners’ safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, “ You’ll be alright ma’am, when they know it isn’t so.”

“Lord,” said the angel, touching his sleeve,” rest and work tomorrow.”

“I can’t,” said the Lord, “I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on civil service paycheck.”

The angel circled the model of the Peace Officer very slowly, “Can it think?” she asked.

“You bet,” said the Lord, “It can tell you elements of a hundred crimes, recite Miranda warnings in it’s sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five judges to debate the legality of the stop…and still it keeps it’s sense of humor.

This officer also has phenomenal personal control. They can deal with crime scenes painted in HELL, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim’s family’ and then read in the daily paper how Law Enforcement isn’t sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects.

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Peace Officer. “There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model.”

“That’s not a leak,” said the Lord, “It’s a tear.”

“What’s the tear for?” asked the angel.

“It’s for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, and for justice.”

“You’re a genius,” said the angel.

The Lord looked sober. “I didn’t put it there,” he said.

To a friend and wonderful officer who will never be forgotten.
Shad, was a man who talked so highly of his wife and children. Remembering those days in class (04-157), just behind me in the seat, he would say he missed them so dearly.
My heart truly goes out to the loved ones of Shad.....May he live in our hearts forever

If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go, Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always, Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own, And in time when men decide and feel safe to call the streets insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind. We will se you in Elysium..
