We had just finished a year's worth of mourning over the tragic death of Deputy Mike Arruda (EOW 06-15-04) - memorials, fundraisers, dedications - when again we are confronted with the senseless death of another one of our own, Deputy Jerry Ortiz.

Jerry graced our halls in the years 2000-2001,always with a smile and a kind word. All he wanted to do was be a cop and take care of his family. That he was taken down by the scourge of the earth is prophetic, as that's the kind of person he worked hardest to put behind bars.

Thanks for trying to make our streets safe. And thank you for your sacrifice. May your family and loved ones find peace and comfort from knowing you died doing what you loved and that your entire law enforcement family is mourning with them.

God bless. Rest in peace, hero.

I had an opportunity to meet several members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at Arlington Cemetary during Police Week 2005. I also witnessed the wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in honor of another fallen officer for the same department. Because of all of the people I met and faces I saw, I cannot remember if you, Officer Ortiz were one of them. However I can say that I was very impressed with every member of your department that I met. You all seemed like such a close group. Having lost a special person in my life on May 15, 2004, I can grieve with your family. Please know that we will never forget, not for a moment, your contributions to mankind. May God Bless your family, both immediate and police and rest knowing you'll see them again.

My brother Jerry was a man I was just getting to know, we did not grow up together but upon starting our reacquaintance, it was as if we had always known each other. He had a very gentle and compassionate nature about him. Jerry also gave a sense of security and strength. He was a protector and a great listener, but what stood out in my brother was that he had an inmense capability to love and try to bring peace where it was needed. He had strong moral values and convictions yet never failed to forget that forgivenes completed the person that he was. He will remain in my heart forever, I will miss my brother....

WHEN I THINK OF YOU I SEE A MAN OF COURAGE AND A RELENTLESS WARRIOR WHO STAYED IN THE RINK UNTIL THE END ROUND. YOUR GOAL WAS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND YOU DID. YOUR FAMILY AND THE DEPARTMENT MISS YOU MORE THAN YOU WILL EVER KNOW.

Jerry, you were a great man and a great gang cop! That is why you were soon to be promoted to gang detective. We will never forget your energy, laugh and sincerity. We in the gang unit (OSS) know how much you had fought for the patrol incentive bonus for gang enforcement deputies during the last two years. Someday, I believe gang enforcement deputies will get that bonus. They might call it "The Jerry Ortiz Bonus." You set a good example for us all. Your boys have good reason to stand tall and be proud. God bless.

I did not know Dep. Ortiz... I only know that my prayers go out to this family in their time of loss. I hope that they will call on God for His comfort during this incredibly emotional and painful time. We lost my brother-in-law 9-12-04 and he started out in LASD. It is a loss you do not get over, but you do begin to heal with time. Our love goes to your family.

To the family and friends of this great and selfless defender of freedom. May God guide you with prayers and the knowledge that Jerry was doing what he felt was his calling. And those of us who stood at his side in other areas of this great nation will not let his passing go in vain. As we fill in the space left by Jerry's passing. Know that the Thin Blue line will not fail to continue with his and our mission. To help those that need help and to LOCK UP those that need to be Locked up.

God's speed my brother and rest in peace a job well done.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers as you the mourn the death of your loved ones, Ortiz and Gonzales. There is nothing I can say to make this easier for you, however, know that I can understand the pain you are feeling as I too lost my father (1-26-05) in the line of duty. Please know that he was doing the "right thing" and protecting the community that he served. For this, you should be very proud of Jerry. Connect with those who can help you heal in your grief process. Concerns for Police Survivors and other law enforcement folks can be very helpful. I know if it were not for them, I'm not sure where I would be. I will be thinking of you and praying your pain will ease in time. Rest in peace deputy, your watch is over. Thank you for your service.
