Jerry, I wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas. Christmas isn't the same without you. I miss you so much brother. I miss the phone calls and visits.
While visiting you at the cementary yesterday Mom and I were talking....We were imagining...as much as you loved to celebrate Christmas here, how great the celebration you having up in heaven. I think that is why the sun was shining nice and bright yesterday... It was that big smile of yours shining down upon us.
I love you Jerry.

I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below
with tiny lights like heaven's stars reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear, for I'm spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear; but the sounds of music can't compare with the Christmas choir up here. For I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring, for it's beyond description to hear the Angels Sing. I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart. Remember Christ surrounds us with his love, protecting us from fear. So I'm spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I can't tell you the splendor or the peace here in this place. Can you imagine Christmas with our savior, face to face? I'll ask Him to light your spirit as I tell Him of your love, so then pray for one another, as you lift your eyes above. So please let your hearts be joyful and let your spirit sing, for I am spending Christmas in heaven and I'm walking with the King.

Hi Detective Ortiz.

You were an I/O on one of my cases I had here in Norwalk. We never met in person, but we spoke several times on the phone. I will never forget how much you made me laugh out loud about a comment you made about our case. It was hysterical. Before your death, I regularly relayed the story to my colleagues...it was that funny. To this day, I still tell people about it...only it is a little sadder now.

I discovered this website tonight and immediately sought you out. It appears that your sense of humor was not unusual. I am so fortunate to have experienced it first hand.

I will never forget that Friday afternoon hearing about what had happened in HG on the radio as I was driving home from work. When I got home I turned on the news and eventually realized it was you...my I/o. I remember calling my husband and parents to tell them. This was the closest I had ever gotten to and "officer down" situation and it was shocking.

I can tell from reading these reflections how loved and how very missed you are. I no longer have the case we had together, another DA and Detective Gary Sloan have taken the reins to carry on for justice. But, I will never forget that phone call, where in the midst of an otherwise boring day, you left an impression on me. I love to laugh out loud and when it happens, I remember. So I will always remember you, Detective Ortiz.

Carry on in heaven, from what I have read tonight, your fellow deputies have the watch...

Hey Jerry,

You are on my mind and in my heart daily. Coming to know your family, it is no wonder why you turned out to be such a great, special man. I see you in all of them, especially Jeremy. He's a great kid! I hope you are proud of the things we have done to honor your life. You must enjoy the East L.A. Station tradition and get a kick out of Thrusdays. I miss you brother. I'll always be there for your family. Hope you're at the football game tonight! Thanks for being my friend. I love you.
