Jerry,
I knew you through one of my older brothers that you played baseball with at Pioneer Park. The day you passed, I was actually in El Monte(I live in AZ) and immediately called my brother to give him the bad news. It's strange, because you really didn't know me, but I think about you on a regular basis. I believe it's that smile of yours. Something like that people can't forget.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Uncle Jerry,
For some reason today has been one of those hard days, the kind of day I just wish that the phone would ring and it would be you calling, and telling me that no matter what it is that is going on we will get through it and you will be there to help me, I know you will be but its not the way that I wish you could. I miss you so much...
I love you

The Jerry Ortiz Memorial Boxing & Youth Fitness Gym looks great. You must be so proud of everyone who pitched in to make it a reality. So many people miss you and it was truly a labor of love. I miss you so much. I love you.

Jerry, I miss you so much. You have been on my mind more and more as time goes by. I don't think it will ever be "easier" it just gets harder. I truly miss your voice and your smile. Tyus reminds me so much of you. I constantly talk to the Tyus and Julianni about you so they never forget you. They say they remember your smile and you biting their hand. They told me mom how can we forget our uncle Jerry. Juju said, "mom my nino is always with me", and I truly believe that. You are our Angel Jerry. About a month or two ago I was watching the new program "The Academy" with the new recruits. You came out in it. It was so hard Jerry to see you there. It was a picture of you and they were talking about your murder. It broke my heart and I relived that moment again. God Bless those recruits and all law enforcement. I love you brother with all my heart and soul. You will always have a special place in my heart. Muah! your little sister Claudia

Jeremy and Jacob are doing great I know you see them grow into handsome young men. We finally got to see little Jacob wow, how much he has grown. Jerry, they are looking more and more like you. When Jacob came over to moms house, you couldn't take that smile off his face. He was so thrilled to be there with our family. We played baseball, moon sand and played with walkie talkies. I am sure you saw all that too. He will be coming over this weekend again for awhile. Wish us luck and I am sure you will be there with us. Jeremy will be leaving next week to ASU keep a good eye on him. We will from down here. He has a good head on his shoulders. I know he will do great!!!

Jerry,

I always think about you and the great times we had in patrol and the gang teams. When thinking of you I always get a smile on my face. On August 11th, a Boxing Gym will be opened in your honor in El Monte, Calif. May your spirit fill the halls and bring honor to your true calling. God Bless you and may he always watch over your family. Robert

Jerry,

It was an honor to serve on the honor guard at your grave site yesterday. I hope you're proud of the East L.A. traditions that will honor you forever. Coming to know your bride, Chela, and family has truly been a blessing. I hope you see Nicole talk to you and kiss your photo. It can't be explained, but she knows. We all miss you soooo much. God Bless YOU and THANK YOU for everything.

It has been two years today that you were taken from us. I still can't believe you are gone. Chela, your family, and your friends miss you everyday. I will always carry your smile and the memories we shared in my heart. Please continue to watch over us. I love you bro.

Deputy Jerry Ortiz,

I don't personally know you but from what I have read so far from your reflections, it appears to me that you are tremendously loved by your family. You have a loving family that loves you unconditionally. Looking at your picture makes me smile, it seems that your smile can bright up a room as you enter it. Although you are not physically here on earth, your soul and loving spirit is present to the people that love you. What I truly learn from reading your reflection is this: I have two other brothers in law enforcement, our lives can be busy with work and family but it is never to busy to say "I love you bro." Thank you for giving more appreciation with my family and never to take them for granted. I honor you and may your family be blessed with peace and tranquility. God speed Deputy Jerry Ortiz. You will never be forgotten!

Uncle Jerry, it is 2 years since you were taken from us, and it seems like just yesterday. I miss you so much, and the hurt still does not seem to ease or go away. I find comfort in know you are in heaven, but I still find myself looking at my phone thinking that it will ring and you will be on the other end of it. Thank you for being with me and everyone. Please continue to watch over Tia Chela, the boys and everyone. You will never be forgotten Uncle Jerry and you will always live on in our Hearts and thoughts.

I Love you

Jerry,
Happy Father's Day. Today we celebrated Jeremy's graduation from high school. It was fun, but not the same without you there. A day doesn't go by that you aren't missed. Please keep watching over us from heaven.
