I knew Dave Barnett form the 8th grade in Ridgeroad JHS, and attended NLRHS with him, graduating in 1975. We both did stints in the Marines and kept up with each other. Dave and his brother Phil were my best friends. Phil called me in Alaska the day Dave was killed. I was leaving for the Gulf War an could not attend his funeral. It is now 2010, and I still miss hearing him laugh and tell funny stories. He was an outstanding Marine, a great police officer, and a true friend.

I knew David only in passing, which is common at a larger PD. David loved what he was doing and served the city well. I have just recently found this site and wish his family and friends well. David rests a few rows south of my infant son, Adam Tyler Bell. Adam is under the big tree with David looking down on him. We are no longer in Arkansas, but it brings comfort to know that the two are there. When you are there to visit David, turn around and wave at Adam, give them both our love since we hardly get there ourselves.

Thinking of you as Christmas approaches. This will be our first without my dad, so I'm sure it will be hard. Continuing to think of you and the time we worked together at Dillards. Praying for your family this Christmas season.

I was still a "teenager" when we met while I was working at the mall. You were so nice to everyone you met, and you made all our days brighter. So many folks were at your funeral, even standing on the bridges saluting you. I will never forget the sacrifice you made! Your photo above doesn't show that wonderful humor you had, and your way to make those around you comfortable. I still think of you often. Thank you for everything!

I was very sad when I heard of David's death. I first met him the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where we had a class together. His training as an EMT was very helpful the day he stopped as I did to help an elderly couple who had been in an automobile accident. He was a friendly outgoing person who deserved better than he got. I think of him often as he grew up in the Bellwood section of North Little Rock as my wife did. His mother's house is just a few blocks from my wife's parents home. Your family is in my prayers.

I just wanted to say...I still think about David and wonder what he would be doing today if he had not been cut down so early in life. We miss you and continue to pray for your family and fellow LRPD officers. A recent incident brought back the horrible memories of that night at Waffle House and I have been reflecting on all the good times and laughs we had over the years. To everyone that reads this...Hold your family and friends close to your heart because you never know when they will be called home. God Bless David and his family and all of the LRPD Police Officers.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Wow - it will be 16 years tomorrow since you were taken from your family and friends. That is so hard to believe but I certainly remember when you were killed and the funeral. I've never seen such an eclectic group of people in one place - police friends, biker friends, friends from Dillards - just amazing. But, that was the kind of person you were! You have not been forgotten and I still appreciate all you did while keeping the people of Little Rock safe. Rest in peace, HERO!!!

Well, David, it is almost Christmas and I wanted to stop by and wish you a big Merry Christmas in heaven. I would think that would be the ultimate celebration. I visit this site daily and have seen too many men and women killed in the line of duty this year - even two from Arkansas. Too many heroes lost.

Dave was a wonderful friend for many years and was always smiling and joking. A former Marine Dave took his duty very seriously and was always trying to help those he encountered on the job as well as friends and family.
I remember the day Dave was hired at Little Rock PD. He was so excited and anxious to get to work. He loved his job and did his very best.
It was a real blow when we lost him. I'll never forget you buddy!

I think about him often...He used to hang out at UAMS during the slow times and when he brought in patients. It was hard to hear of his murder...and even harder to later that night to take care of his killer...Barnett was a brave and honorable man...he is missed even by people like me who did not even know him all that well.
