Reflections for Police Officer Michael Patrick Gordon

Dear Mike,

Cullen is leaving tomorrow to start on his adventure camping trip to Alaska. Your son loves this kind of thing and hopes to be a counselor at Camp Manatowish in Wisconsin next year. He loves adventure that's for sure - kind of takes after you. I believe this is his 5th or 6th year at the Camp advancing every year to this once in a lifetime trip.

Of course I'm concerned as it is for 45 days - traveling by bus, plane and kayak. Please watch over him and his fellow campers regarding their health and safety. I, of course, have my own concerns since I am his grandma - my protective mode is in over-drive because their only means of communication will be a satellite phone.

Love & miss you.

Mike, I hope you and Grandpa were waiting for Grandma Puf this morning when she made her way up to heaven.

I hope she gets to see all her relatives and friends who have passed before her.

Love and miss all of you.

Mike, remembering your last Mother's Day gift to me - an antique typewriter. You came in the back door holding it high in the air saying, "look what I found".

I still have the pin you bought me, when you were 8 or 9, at a garage sale - you were very proud of it.

Good memories. Love and miss you.

Dear Mike, Today was the 12th CPD Memorial Run to Remember. Thousands showed up, even in the bad weather, to remember our fallen.

Your son Cullen, brothers, niece, nephews and friends all participated on Team Gordon. Cullen's swim team from high school came to support him and to volunteer.

You would be so proud of all your children.

Dad & I driving to Dubuque tomorrow to drop off some of Malik's things since he will be spending the summer there in a house he and some friends are renting. Crossed fingers all goes well for him. One year of college down!

Love and miss you everyday.

Happy Birthday Michael. Was out to visit you today and leave some flowers at your grave site. Cleaned it up a little and thought of years past. Even the Van shaped birthday cake I baked for you on your 13th Birthday. I have no idea why I remember that cake. Miss you every day, especially today. You will never be forgotten and are always with me in my heart. Love and miss you. Happy Birthday. Please keep watch over everyone for me.

Love,
Dad

Dear Mike...Today is one of the "special days"...when parents in particular...have an even tougher time...with this new normal... that none of us...would have ever wanted to know.

You...your dear parents...and your family...remain in my daily prayers...as I wish for you today...A Very Blessed 42nd Birthday.

Your Dad...recently shared a loving tribute to you...made by your son Cullen...who was asked to be the guest speaker...at the Chicago Police Memorial Candle Lighting Ceremony in 2015. He is a very handsome and gifted young man...who looks a lot like you...and he did you and your family...very proud. God bless him and his siblings.

Rest Peacefully Mike. You are loved...missed...and will never be forgotten.

Dear Mike,

I'm sorry I didn't write for Xmas but things were hectic here. As usual, we celebrated on Xmas Eve and your sons, brothers & their families, Grandma Puf and Aunt Kathy were here.

We have a table top Xmas tree for you, decorated with all things related to your life.

Your Dad, however, did make it to the cemetery on Xmas.

Love and miss you.

Merry Christmas Michael. This is always the worse time of the year for us. Everyone was here last night and we talked about you like we always do. I can't express in words how much we miss you and how the holidays are so hard for me and your Mom, as is every day without you here with us. Please watch over everyone for me.

Love,
Mom and Dad

Officer Gordon, what a great thing for your kids, so often families are forgotten. This is one of the most difficult times for families, and your dad has always been there for me, I know that you are watching over them all. Continue to rest in peace. I am going to Washington DC for Christmas this year and I will stop by and sit awhile by your name. Heroes live forever, and you are a hero.

Dear Mike,

Yesterday the CPD Memorial's Operation Santa honored your children with gifts. Mr. & Mrs. Santa arrived, followed by a motorcade of around 16 cars - Darien, CPD and State Police. Around thirty people depart the cars and come into the house for food and beverage.

You are remembered and will never be forgotten. I do wonder what some of the neighbors think though.

Love and miss you always.

Michael,
Eleven years have passed since you were called away. Some say it feels like just yesterday that you were here with us. For me and Mom it has felt like a lifetime since we heard your funny laugh and saw your crooked smile, listened to your stories. I miss those early morning phone calls on your way home from working mids and filling me in on the activity that night. You would always ask the same thing when I answered the phone, "Dad, what you doing?" I was sleeping most of the time but said I was up. If I could only have back those mornings I cut you short. I miss you every day. Please watch over everyone for me. Love and miss you.
