Thank you for protecting all of us. I appreciate you so much. I honor you Brian, your name, your memory and mostly for your ultimate sacrifice. I can see the kindness in your eyes, the compassion in your face. I am both saddened and angered that you were taken from your family and all of us.

Officer Winder,
You stood for everything that is good about this country. The nation mourns your passing. I send my condolences to your family, friends and co-workers.We need more people who have the attributes of Officer Winder and are willing to pay the ultimate price for the freedoms that we enjoy every day.

July 7, 2004

Brian,
I had met you at a few Honor Guard assignments and I thought that you had done a wonderful job during those assignments. I'm also sure you were doing your best on the day that you fell prey to our county's worst enemy; The Criminal. Rest assured, those of us who are left to carry on the fight will do every thing we can to bring the surviving criminal who hurt you, to justice. As you already know, the other coward took the easy wayout.
Go easy brother, and look after us.

"A Part of America Died”
Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died. A piece of our country he swore to protect will be buried with him at his side. The suspect that shot him will stand up in court, with counsel demanding his rights. While a young widowed mother must work for her kids, and spend many long, lonely nights. The beat that he walked was a battlefield too, just as if he'd gone off to war. Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast, to his name they will add a gold star. Yes, somebody killed a policeman today, in your town or mine. While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors, a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street, and he stands at each new rookie's side. He answered the call, of himself gave his all, and a part of America died.

I just read that your murderer committed suicide and so the taxpayers don't have to pay for his lawyer, trial and incarceration. I am also thankful that everyone who cares about you doesn't have to endure a trial and dredge up all the details over again. You'll have to do that for the other guy caught anyway, but 1 trial is better than 2. May justice be done.

Officer Winder...from February till June of this year I had the honor of being assigned to you as a trainee. In a matter of 16 weeks you were responsible for preparing me to go out on the street. Needless to say you had your work cut out for you. When I was first paired up with you, fellow officers would say how lucky I was to have you for an FTO...I thought otherwise at first. You demanded 110% from me. You were constantly on me for everything, from my report writing to my punctuality. Or my driving skills to not paying attention to the radio. I think a few of those grey hairs you had were a result of riding with me when responding code 1. There were times during field training when I pondered whether or not this line of work was for me. But as training progressed, the things you taught me started to fall into place to the point where during the final phases of field training, you had enough confidence in me that you would tell me to handle the calls myself while you sat back watched. When you began refering to me as your partner and not your trainee that made me feel good. Now that I'm out on my own, I definately see why you pushed me. I can't thank you enough Officer Winder. When field training ended I was angry upon learning I was being reassigned to another district. But you were quick to point out that despite district boundaries you were literally only a several blocks away and and to hit you up on direct connect if I ever need anything. You not only made a great impact on me, but the citizens you served. I could see it in there faces when we were on patrol together. Everybody knew Officer Winder.
Was I lucky to have you for an FTO...I was blessed to have had you as my FTO. I will truly miss you. My prayers go out to the entire Winder family.
