We are nearing the anniversary of your death and remembering your courage and dedication to a profession that sometimes appears thankless. Look over the rest of us and you and your partner did the night you both gave the ultimate sacrifice.....we continue to do a job that most will never volunteer to do, I hope your family will find comfort someday in knowing that you will never be forgotten.

You and Officer Bowens are the inspiration for me to go into law enforcement after graduating high school. Right now I am in the 10th grade, but in a few years I will be an LEO. You two are the real heroes.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I made an error in my last reflection, tomorrow, the 17th is your 30th birthday. Happy Birthday anyway...hope you are smiling down on all of us.

October 16, 2007

Not only does today mark 44 months of your passing but it is also your 30th birthday. So happy birthday Jen, have a great time celebrating the BIG 3-0 up in heaven. Just know you are missed and loved by many.

October 16, 2007

Hard to believe that it'll be 44 months tomorrow since you were so brutally taken away from all those who knew & loved you. Please keep a special watch on those who still miss you so very much. Not a day goes by where I don't think of you and everything you never got to do. May God hold you in his loving embrace until we meet again. Love & Miss You!

There are so many things I remember. Mostly, it would have to be her smile.

I sit here, my cheeks stained with tears, crying over a life cut way too short. Jenny is one of those people who just radiate light. We became friends through mutual friends. We grew close until she and her family moved to MI our senior year of high school. I still have the pictures we took before she left. That same bright smile.

We kept in contact for the next several years, through my college years, through my marriage, through her meter maid days, through academy, ups and downs. I loved getting her letters and/or emails.

Unfortunately, as it often does, life gets in the way and letters/emails get few and far between, but I always knew she was there.

I hadn't heard from her in a while and figured she was busy with work. I happened to go to my parents after work one night. My mom was sitting at the kitchen table with a serious look on her face and said "I have to show you something."

I still have the newspaper article that was run in the News-Press explaining her and her partner's untimely demise. I can't let go. I still have her email address in my address book. I still have letters, cards, pictures. I can't let go.

I think of her family often and wonder how they are doing...wanting to contact them but not knowing what to say.

I am so thankful to know the wonderful person Jenny is....and I say is because she lives on in my memory....and in my heart.

I miss you, Jenny, and I am so glad you are my friend. Rest in peace and save a spot for me! We have a lot to catch up on!!

Jenn,

You will always be remembered. As i still speak of you and Matt, I will always remember that night, and tell a story of when, we made a location on a reported B&E. As getting the info from our complainant, the perp's drove pass in that white Dodge neon. We took off after them in our patrol car. As you called out the chase, Air-8 was above our location and helped get all into custody as they bailed out.

I only know of that incident in my 8 years on the job, that the helicopter ever used to assist in an arrest.

Please continue to keep an watchfull eye on us from up above. God bless

Tomorrow marks 42 months since you were so brutally taken out of this world away from all those who knew & loved you so very much. May you continue to watch over law enforcement officers everywhere. I think of you and Officer Bowens often. God bless you & rest in peace.

Jennifer,

I did not know you personally, but as a former Detroit officer (93-E) I will always feel a connection to you and all other Detroit Officers.

I was an Officer in Arizona when I heard about your EOW and my heart sank and grieved for you and your partnet. May God give your family peace and watch over the rest of OUR brothers and sisters on the streets.

Joe
Former DPD Officer
