Reflections for Conservation Officer James Lansford "Lance" Horner, Jr.

God our Heavenly Father
We confess that we do not understand your ways
Despite our pain
We sincerily ask that you would take James Lanceford's family under your wing
Only in you is our confidence
We trust that you will be the guardian and provider for the Lanceford household
The Holy Spirit is our comforter
Through him we ask for peace and strength for Mrs. Lanceford
Father of all Fathers
Finally we ask that You would take Jame's infant son and walk with him and teach him all those things that his earthly father would have.
In Jesus name we pray
Amen.

Lance was a member of our family the last two years of his college career at Auburn Univesity Montgomery. Lance loved law enforcement and the outdoors! Part of having Lance stay with us was his wonderful deer roast and his police scanner!
Often Lance would grab our 10 year old and say"come on squirt lets go run this call." Lance was a big brother to our son and a fine man. He became a father just this year and enjoyed all that comes with it, we got a picture of his boy just days after Lance died. Lets live Lance's legacy by laying down our lives for each other and not just dying for what we believe in but living for it...just like Lance. Just as he was always welcome at our house he will be missed.

Lance, I can't believe your gone. You lived with us for over two years while going to school and became like one of the family. You were a big brother to our son, squirt, as you called him, who is himself now a Marine. We were out of town and did not find out until today (July 5, 2003). We had received some more pictures of your boy, who you were so proud of. We were just thinking what a great dad you would be for your little squirt. We will miss you and look forward to the day we can see you again.

Lance became a very special person in our lives the first day he came to Clarke County and remained very special until the day he died. We have many good memories--personally and professionally. There are things that will always remind us of him--When he met Jessica, that made our times even more special and then the birth of Jacob made life complete. We extend our love and sympathy to Jessica, Jacob, Sharon, Mike, and to Susan and Jim and all the family members. We will always love Lance and will be here for Jessica and Jacob.

We are truly saddened at James' loss.

We all recall you gave your best.
You did your job, now you can rest.
Your comrades now can cover your post
as you take your place with the Heavenly Host.

God Bless Our Fallen Brothers & Sisters.

Our prayers will be with you, your family, and co-workers!

I am so sad to hear of the loss of this fine officer. We are all hurt to lose a borhter officer in the family of the badge. This demonstrates that no part of law enforcement is routine.

I pray for his family, friends and of course, his family. He now protects the gardens of Heaven with St. Michael. God Bless and be safe.

Lance, from the time you arrived in Clarke County to start your career as a conservation officer we had many good times patrolling the rivers & working night hunting details. These are things I will surely miss! I only wish we had been able to spend more time together recently. On June 22, 2003 I came as fast as I could to help you. I did the only thing that I could for you & I feel that you were smiling down as we took our last ride up the river together. Jessica & Jacob. you will always be in my heart & prayers.

It's very humbling to read of tragedies such as the one that took Officer Horner's life. I ache for his wife and small child. May they be comforted by God.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and James be the be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Conservation Officer Horner's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that James is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain James was well respected and well loved. Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

I came home the other day from my tour, just to be sadden to hear that a true friend of 23 years had past away. It hit really hard because of the time that we had spent growing up. Speaking of growing up, Lance and I had always dreamed about our life in law enforcement and that his love for the wild and the great wilderness of Alabama. I can ease the pain in my heart over this great loss by saying that Lance left this great earth doing what he loved to do. Just as I will be when it is my time to meet my Father. Lance, I just want say that I will miss you and that I know that God has got him a Damn Good Game Warden in his Garden Of Eve. 10-7

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.

There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.
