Reflections for Police Officer Ryan Eugene Cappelletty

Ryan,
We grieve for you. Though you were with of us a short time, know that you were one of us and we love you. Your sacrifice reminds us of the job we do and makes us proud to do it. The loss of a brother is so hard to bear. You will not be forgotten. Your sacrifice reminds us how precious life is and what our commitment is all about. The citizens that you served may never know the extent of the sacrifice you made for them, but your brothers will always remember. You make us proud. Proud of what you did and proud that we had the privilege of serving with you. Every time we put on that uniform and everytime we answer the call the memory of you will be in our hearts. Watch over us and rest in peace. We love you though we didn't know you well enough.

Final Inspection

The officer stood and faced his God.
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other check?
To your church have you been true?

The officer squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because all of us who carry badges
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was rough,
And sometimes I've been violent
Because the streets are tough.

But I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got way too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept an unmanly tear.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't...I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints are trod.
As the officer waited quietly
For the judgement of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer.
You've borne your burdens well
Come walk a beat on heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

So, so sad and senseless! May Rachel and the rest of Ryan's family know that they are in the hearts of so many people. No words can comfort you now, but I hope as time goes by it just won't hurt as much.

I never got to meet Ryan, but my prayers are with the family. This tragedy has filled my face with tears. I don't know what else to say except I am sorry this happened. I just hope that his family can be sure that his death wasn't in vain. This such a strong reminder of how quick our lives can be taken away. God Bless You Brother. Godspeed my brother in blue. Rest in peace. Your family, friends and coworkers will remain in my thoughts and prayers. May your loved ones take solace in the fact you gave your life in an effort to make this world a better place and now you are in a much better place.

Ryan, I knew you briefly but I will always remember you. I ran and assisted you with several calls and all I can ever remember was your smile and your love for the profession.

You were only a rookie when you joined our shift and you took your lumps from us in stride. You knew how A/N worked and you fit in like you had belonged here for years. You volunteered for calls that made the rest of us sigh. You gladly backed fellow officers regardless of being assigned a distant beat. You gave your life so that others here can live.

God says those who give their life so that others can live is a great sacrifice. God also appoints those to be in authority and you were a chosen one.

I have never felt such a loss since the loss of Mongo in 1998 with the City of Richmond. I know, with this loss, I now have another brother watching over me whenever I am at work.

Ryan, whenever I clear a call, just like the last time I saw you, I know you will be marking code 14 (assisted unit) as I go on to the next call.

We all love you and miss you dearly. You will always have a place in our hearts and truly are a member of the Chesterfield County Police Department's A/N shift forever.

God be with you and watch over us all.

I would like to personally thank his family for allowing us to work with such a fine officer. When he graduated the academy, he was a fine police officer but he quickly developed into a great "cop". His loss is sorely felt.

To you and your family, Ryan from mine... God bless you and we love you.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Ryan's family at this very difficult time. I met Ryan a year and a half ago when my daughter married into his extended family. He was loved by many and will be missed greatly. Not much can be said at this sad time but I just want to say that "I care and many others care". Ryan and all the other policemen are such brave heros. Because of them our neighborhoods are much safer. I was told that Ryan really loved what he was doing. I only wish that he could have loved it a lot longer. Now he is in heaven with all the other officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice to help manking. He will never be forgotten. All gave some and some gave all. Ryan's family can be very proud of him.

Ryan, I never knew you, but I know what kind of an officer you were, having known and worked with many, many of your fellow officers for years. My heart hurts to hear of your loss, Chesterfield. You're all in my prayers.

former Chesterfield Police Dispatcher

Dear Family of Officer Cappelletty,

You are in our thoughts and prayers for the loss of our brother "Ryan". You will always remain in our hearts and thoughts throughout our daily lives. And now Ryan as the policeman's prayer to St. Michael says you will now go on to guard the throne of God as you have guarded the city of men. God bless you and your family.

Officer K.M. Pope U280 & Patty
Chesterfield County Police

To the wife, family, friends and co-workers of Officer Ryan Cappelletty. My wife and I were saddened to learn of Ryan's untimely death. It seems so unfair that a life of a police officer is snuffed-out by someone whos life was made safer by police officers. The death of anyone affects someone. The death of a police officer affects the entire police community/family. We hope you find more comfort in his life than sorrow in his death. Our thoughts are with you.

So young, a career and a young mans life cut tragically short. Rest in peace brother and God bless. You served a short time but will be remembered by your brothers and sisters in blue forever.

I graduated high school with Ryan. I was not close friends with him on a personal level, however, he is a fellow McDowell Trojan, and we stick together. My heart goes out to all of his family, loved ones, and grieving fellow officers. May God be with you always.

My Brother you were, are and always will be part of A/N. You and your family are our family. We were so blessed to have you with us even though it was for such a short time. Rachel your husband is a hero! He will be missed but never forgotten. To you and his family thank you for allowing us the privilege of working with him. Thank you for sharing him with us. In his short time with us he touched us deeply and let us in to his family. My brother you are now with God and in our hearts. Rest easy!

We would like to express our respect, admiration, and love for the great man we lost. For those outside the Law Enforcement Community it might help to understand one thing: WE ARE A FAMILY. LE Communities everywhere are grieving the loss of our loved one, our brother. One phrase sticks in our minds, we here it all the time but it has never rang more true: we have lost one of our own. This is the first officer Chesterfield has lost this way and we are all having a hard time accepting this tragedy. To Ryan's wife, family, and friends: Thank You. You gave us a man we will always remember, a man who gave his life protecting us. To our friends in the Chesterfield Police Department we love you and give you all of our support.

Officer Ryan Cappelletty may God bless you and keep you always by His side.

Thank all of you for reflecting on our dear Ryan. We are in shock but know he was doing what he wanted to do with his life. He never swerved from his decision once he entered Criminal Justice at Edinboro University. I wish you could all know him as we do. Strong, bright, faithful, loving and kind. He loved his sweet wife Rachel for one glorious year. They celebrated their one year anniversary just two days before he was shot. We grieve but we will remember him with honor. He leaves loving parents, a sister, two sets of proud grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins who adored him. We'll see you in heaven, Ryan. Keep the light on for us.
