I Knew Dwight for a very short period of time, the first time i met him i knew i had stumbled across someone special, someone i could respect unconditionally, its been a little over 2 years now and still when i hear people talk about dwight, i well up like a 2 yearold, i saw dwight 3 days before he fell, and will never forget what he said to me, i'll keep that part to myself, he was surely an inspiration to all of us, even those that wear a badge of a different color....i miss you buddy....i wish i would have had the opportunity to know you better...and dont worry, we ALL watch over the MRS's and kiddos.....they are doin ok....

Dwight,

I have never met you, but have had the pleasure of knowing your family. Karen is one of the strongest people I know and she is doing a great job. We met at COPS and have become good friends. Your children are all beautiful and smart, they would make you proud. I hope that you can help your dept. to get the case going and the arrests made. Its been a long road for Karen and it would be nice to know a trial date. You have a wonderful home and Karen is doing a great job at keeping things going,,,,You would be so proud of her. We love her!

Dwight,
Although we never met I have been fortunate to meet your family. Karen, Calvin, Jessica, Wyatt, and Jasper are 4 of the best people in the world and I know you had a lot to do with that.
Meeting Karen has been such a blessing she is a true friend that even takes calls in the middle of the night. I hope that you are able to watch over your family and help them out when they need it. I hope that you, Marlon, and Doug all hang out in the place Meghan calls 'Seven'! I know that I depend on Karen and Tammy to get through some of the hard times. Out of the tragic events that took your life I made 2 of the best friends I could have hoped for... I'm sorry.

I didn't know Dwight very well just a few passing hello's when I was a reserve for the Cleveland Police Department. But those few times I did see him he always had a word or two of encouragement to say to me. He did his job well and with dignity.

I would like to take this opportunity to comment on Dwight as a sherrif. In my carrer of law enforcement, I have noticed that primarily the sherrifs duties typically are associated with office duties, Public relations etc.. Dwight was the only sherrif that I know personally that would assist his deputies on search warrants or check on suspicous vehicles in the early morning hours. Most sherrifs, inlcuding other officers probaly would have just drove by the suspicous vehicle at the oil business. BUT not sherrif Woodrell. The only thing the sherrif was guilty of was doing his job!

Sherrif Woodrell has stopped on several occasions when I was on a traffic stop just to see if I am OK. He would not leave until the violator had drove away and then he would give me the "smile" and the thumbs up.

Dwight is and will be missed. God bless his family.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to reflect on my brother Dwight's page. Dwight was a very special man, a loving Husband, Father, Son and to me most important a very loving Brother. I never believed that this could happen and therefore sympathize with the other families that have been affected in such a way, my heart goes out to all of you. I know my God has a reason for such a tragedy to happen and that there will be justice if not in this lifetime in God's own time. Dwight was proud to be a Sheriff and took great pride in the job that he did, thank you again to everyone who took the time to acknowledge him.
God Bless You All.

Dwight,
Through all of the good times our department has been through since you were elected Sheriff as well as the teamwork that you had installed in all of the guys, the last thing that I thought, when I came to back you up, was that I would find you shot, with your life slipping away!
I hope you realize just how much you meant to all of us and how deeply you are going to be missed! You have touched more lives than you could have ever imagined.
None of us will ever be the same without you boss.
Goodbye my friend...until we meet again at the great S.O. in the sky.

All of us within the Chaves County Sheriff's Department wish to express our condolences and deepest sympathy in the death of Deputy Dwight Calvin Woodrell, Jr.

Whether it is in the line of duty or from other causes, the death of an officer, friend and loved one is not easy to accept. I hope that knowing that your department and the family of your officer will be remembered in our prayers will be of some comfort in the days to follow.

I went High School with Dwight. He played the trombone in jazz band and the fondest memory I have of him was him sitting behind me in band class making jokes and talking. He was always full of wit and as pleasant as possible. So long Dwight, you will be missed!

Claire

My name is David Miller, I am a high school classmate and college roommate of Dwight's. The shock and pain that is felt when someone you know has suffered a tragedy is so great that the best thing for you to do is to remember all the good memories. Woody as most people called him, and I had alot of fun times and great memories together. While in college I was able to get to know Woody alot better. One of the things Woody loved to do was to pull pranks on people. If he wasn't penny locking doors shut, he would tape record our other roommate (who was also from our high school) coming in drunk and making a fool of himself. Woody would then use it to try and bride him for the next week. The whole time our roommate was trying to get the tape and destroy it. But Woody kept it in a locked drawer. Of course this was all in fun and after a while our roommate was able to laugh about it. Even then Woody knew he was going to be in police enforcement. We would even rig up a red light and put on the roof of his car and chase some of the high school kids around when we would stay at school for the weekend. We never drove dangerously or put anyone in danger, but we sure had alot of fun. One time we had to go before the disciplinary dean for using a rope to tie shut the door of a friend who lived down the hall from us. We had to do some janitorial duties in our dorm for two weeks for punishment. There are alot more memories I could share and I will but for now these are what help me keep Woody in my heart. I'm so proud that he was elected sheriff and that he had a happy life. I only wish that I had got to see Woody in his uniform with his sheriff's badge. I hope that when you read this it will help you deal with loss of our friend .

I WENT TO PRUE HIGH SCHOOL WITH DWIGHT, BUT MOST OF US THERE KNEW HIM AS WOODY. HE ALWAYS HAD A GRIN ON HIS FACE THAT MADE YOU WONDER WHAT HE HAD ON HIS MIND AND WERE YOU THE TARGET OF A PRANK. BUT HE HAD A GOOD HEART AND HIS ESCAPADES WAS GOOD NATURED. WE ARE ALL VERY PROUD OF WOODY AND MISS HIM DEEPLY. MY CONDOLENCES TO HIS FAMILY.GOD BLESS.

MORGANS CORNER FIRE DEPT.

I was in Pawnee County several years ago with my church, building a church and met several of your deputies. I don't know if I ever met Sheriff Woodrell but my thoughts and prayers go out to your department and to his family. I was an officer with the Montgomery Police Dept in Montgomery Ala back then but have since retired and now with the Montgomery Co Sheriffs Dept. I know the pain and sorrow of losing a friend in the line of duty. Officers all across the nation feel your pain. We just have to keep going and do the job just like Sheriff Woodrell would have.

Sheriffs Deputy Stephen Z Smith
Montgomery Co Sheriffs Dept

Sheriff Woodrell, may you rest in peace. The world is a better place because you were here. Thank you for your service. You died a hero. God bless you and your family.

Robert W. Cannon, Captain(Retired)
Vermilion County(IL) Sheriff's Dept.

God has a purpose for everything and everyone. It may take us all months even years before we understand why the Sheriff had to leave this earth and his family at such a young age. Until then we must have faith in the purpose that God had for Sheriff Woodrell. I had visited with the Sheriff on a couple of occassions. He was a kind, soft-spoken man with a gentle spirit. His character makes it even more difficult to understand why such a terrible thing can happen to such a good man. I send out love and patience to his wife and children. I look forward to the day we see the good Sheriff again. God bless you.
