Reflections for Police Officer Francis Paul Scurry

Paul, I went to DC and looked for your name on the LE memorial. I thought about you as found your place. I had just changed shifts and will never forget watching the news and hearing about you that day. Rest in peace Brother.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Paul,
It seems just like yesterday we were all cutting up at in-service. You were a special person sent here to do a special job. Well, I'm retired now and our times together still bring back very good memories. Memories are one thing that nobody can take away, not even the thugs on the streets. Keep heaven safe for us all.

I was upset when I learned what happened to you that horrible day. First because I hate it when any law enforcement officer makes the ultimate sacrifice, and second because I knew who you were. I went to school with Melanie. I was in the band when she was in the guard. I still stop by your final resting place whenever I'm in the cemetery. I will remember you always!

I was working at the Sheriffs office in Robertson county when this happened to you. It came over the computer as the other agencies were finding out what had happened. At first I was sad, then I thought, that guy has alot of balls going up in an attic after someone with a gun. Then I was more proud of you than sad. Kinda sounded like something I would have done. We still remember you...and your bravery. God bless.

I never had the opportunity to know you. I have, however, over the last year had the opportunity to meet and become friends with two of the most precious people I've ever encountered..........your Daughter, Melanie and your Granddaughter, (whom you never knew)Olivia. I know that you were very precious to Melanie and I know that you had to be a precious soul just as she is. I'm so very thankful and blessed to have such a wonderful person as she is in my life. Thank you so much for such a wonderful creation that you've left us to cherish.

Happy Father's Day, Daddy! I love you and miss you more than any words can explain. Ten years have passed and still that hole in my heart remains. Time has mended most of the pain, I live on your memories, your pictures, and stories of you shared by so many. Just to have one more hug, what I wouldn't give. I know you are with me and I love you!

Brother Scurry,

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Respectfully,
You’re Brothers in Blue

Paul,I did not know you but the day you gave your life I was hanging out with a fellow MNPD officer that was a friend of yours.I felt the pain because you are a brother in blue.I did not get to attend your funeral but I did record it and often review it to remind me of the dangers we face.GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY,FRIENDS AND CO-WORKERS!

Officer Scurry's death has made a lasting impression on the officers of MNPD. When reminding us of range safety on a tour of the gun range, he was specifically mentioned as the reason Nashville officers carry Glock 22's. Not many people can say their death made a difference, but I have to wonder how many other officers have lived because of this man's death.

Rest in Peace.

Paul,

It will be 8 yrs. next month that you were taken from us. Please know that you are thought of and missed. My mother has now joined you and I know you are both looking over me. I hope you are still ribbing her about her "frozen turnip greens."
I love you Paul and miss you so much!!

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

Paul,
Even though it has now been seven years, I still think of you often. I miss your smile, laugh and wonderful sense of humor. The few times we rode together are still vivid memories.
More than police memories, I remember all the kidding we would give each other during football season. You would bug me about my Volunteers and I would bug you about your South Carolina Gamecocks. Well, in the last three or four years your Gamecocks have done very well. I still have to pull for the Vols against them, but just for you I love to see them do well.
Because of changes in assignments we did not get to see each other much in the last few years prior to you being taken from us, but I'll always remember running into you about three weeks before your shootout. We talked for a while and you told me about your plans to take your pension in a couple of years and return to your home state of South Carolina. I wish you could have done that. I would love to be able to call you in South Carolina to bug you.
I miss you. God bless.

Paul,

There are no words that can express the impression you made on my life and my heart.  You were more than just my training officer, you were my friend, my brother.  I love you so very much.  My heart aches with loss for your company. You will forever be loved and missed.  i know you are making God and the angels laugh with your wonderful jokes and stories.

I love you.

Paul:

I have some great memories of you. I remember the talks we used to have. The phone calls you gave me when a good joke wouldn't wait. And especially the great Bar-B-Que ribs you could cook! My life is much richer having known you.

Paul,

At the end of a long shift I was sitting with a few Officers. When the "COP" talk started and we were venting away our fears, your name came up. We laughed at some of your stories and recalled your favorite jokes.

I just wanted you to know that we still think of you and to thank you again making a bad day just a bit better.
