Reflections for Police Officer Richard A. Phillips

Of those three final, defiant shots you fired that horrible night, one found its mark 46 years later. Well done, hero. You and your partner are avenged. Rest in Peace.

Officer Phillips
I saw your case on Cold Case Files today and thanks to the relentlessness of the investigators and the much improved foresics through the years your killer will spend the rest of his life behind bars. You and your partner will never be forgotten.

I watched your story on television the other night and watching footage from your funeral upset me even though you were killed 23 years before I was born. I am happy to see justice was served and the killer who had long ago thought he had escaped justice gets to live out his days in prison.

I just saw your story on Discover. You're a true American hero. Your determination to never give up, to return accurate fire, and hit the cowardly sociopath, who had raped a terrified and innocent teenaged girl and terrorized her friends before shooting you and your partner without warning, is an example to all the good people who care and try to make our world a better place.Good job-I'll remember your example always.

MUCH CREDIT FOR THE ARREST OF THE MURDERER MUST GO TO THE DIEHARD INVESTIGATORS WHO FINALLY BROUGHT THE KILLER TO JUSTICE. IT IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT TO MARVEL AT THE PART OFFICER PHILLIPS HAD IN CATCHING THIS LOSER. AFTER BEING SHOT IN THE BACK BY THIS COWARD, OFFICER PHILLIPS FINAL ACTIONS AS HE LAID DYING ON THE ROADSIDE WERE TO RETURN FIRE WITH UNBELEVEABLE ACCURACY SCORING HITS ON THE FLEEING SUSPECT VEHICLE AND AS IT TURNED OUT ON THE SUSPECT THEREBY CREATING EVIDENCE THAT THE PASSAGE OF OVER 40 YEARS COULD NOT DESTROY.THE SUSPECT HAD TO HAVE KNOWN THEN WHAT WE ALL KNOW NOW. OFFICER PHILLIPS WAS A TRUE WARRIOR AND I'M IN AWE OF HIS NEVER GIVE UP SPIRIT. TO THE FAMILY ,FRIENDS AND FOLLOW OFFICERS OF OFFICER PHILLIPS AND OFFICER CURTIS I HOPE THAT THE ARREST OF THE COWARDLY RAPIST AND MURDERER HAS BROUGHT YOU PEACE AND SOME MEASURE OF CLOSURE AND IN MY OPINION OFFICER PHILLIPS SHOULD BE LISTED AS ONE OF THE ARRESTING OFFICERS.

I leave this reflection as a person who's father has served in law enforcement for our whole lives. I have seen the story about this horrible night and as a citizen, Officer Phillip's sacrifice is so sad but it will not be forgotten by me or those who I tell this story too. I'd like to say god bless him and to his family that had to indure this loss for all of these years. And to the officers and detectives that solved this case, God bless you all as well. Your memory will ever be forgotten Officer Phillips

I just read about your story in the
Sept. issue of monthly magazine.
Alas, justice! You were both taken
with such young families left behind.
What an evildoer he was. I'm just
thankful he didn't get to take his
secret to the grave and will live out
his life behind bars. Thank you for
your supreme sacrifice...it wasn't in
vain.
