Deputy Sheriff Mark Burbridge was shot and killed at the Pottawattamie County Jail, in Council Bluffs, as he and another deputy returned two inmates to the jail after a court appearance.

As the deputies began to take the inmates into the jail one of the inmates attacked him after using a concealed key to remove his shackles. The inmate was able to obtain a firearm from the van and shot both deputies. He then stole the transport van and fled from the jail. He shot a citizen nearby when he attempted to carjack the man. He then abducted another citizen and forced her to drive him from the scene in her vehicle.

The subject was located by Omaha, Nebraska, police officers after releasing the woman. He was taken into custody following a high speed pursuit and charged with numerous felonies related to the carjacking and weapons possession. The man had just been sentenced to 55 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder.

On August 15th, 2017, the man was sentenced to life in prison for Deputy Burbridge's murder and related charges.

Deputy Burbridge had served with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office for 12 years.

This morning as I read news briefing on my phone, I came across this terrible tragedy that befell Deputy Sheriff Mark Burbridge, and his surviving partner Pat. I followed the links and watched the entire footage produced for the public. Although I did not know the officers personally, it was clear from the footage that they operated with integrity from following protocol while transporting those two inmates, and treating them humanely despite the charges they faced. Where I am from, any criminal suspect who is arrested in possession of a gun is usually executed by the police which is controversial, but sometimes understandable given the high risk involved protecting citizens from such a vile human being.
My heart goes out to these brave men's families especially Mark who lost his life doing what is right despite facing death in the face. What a brave man, and from what I have read a loving father, comrade, son and husband.
Please let me know how I can be of assistance. I shall continue to pray for the entire sheriff's department as you continue your investigation, and wisdom to come up with protocols that cover such unforeseen circumstances.
Thank you so much for your service. As the country struggles with the relationship between law enforcement and communities especially those of color, let us not forget law enforcement officials such as deputy Burbridge, and all those who worked to bring this criminal to justice, giving him a day in court that he did not deserve, and for keeping us safe.
