I have never before or since met a kinder or gentle man, I babysat his children and they were a wonderful reflection of him. He was a very good police officer and made Ray City very proud. My husband and myself feel we were truly blessed by knowing him and his family. R.I.P. Chief Giddens.

My name is Glenn Elkins, Im a retired Sgt. Ga. department of corrections, Ed was a dear friend of mine, I feel so sorry his family has been without him all these years. That sorry piece of trash that killed him should have been fried a lot sooner than he was. I was there at Jackson the day they fried him, that was a happy day! There is a lot of evil in this world, but Ill see my friend again one day. God bless Ed and his family.

I was a probation officer in Lakeland the day Ed was murdered. I always remember what a decent guy he was and how shocked we were to lose this friend. We have not forgotten him.

I was in 7th grade when this happened. I thought about this all my life and always wandered how his family was. My sisters and I use to walk the streets of Ray City never knowing anything bad could happen in this quiet little town. Mr Giddens was a nice man that we looked up to as young teens. My dad was in the Air Force and we moved shortly after that, but I never forgot...

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I WAS A TEENAGER IN RAYCITY WHEN HE WAS CHIEF. HE WAS A GOOD MAN AND TOOK THE TIME TO SHOW ME AROUND THE STATION AND EXPLAIN HOW LAW ENFORCEMENT WORKS. HE IS THE REASON I AM A DISPATCHER FOR 911, ALSO THE REASON I AM THINKING OF BECOMING A DEPUTY. HE WAS KIND TO A LONELY CHILD THAT HAD BEEN THROUGH ALOT OF ABUSE FROM A SICK MAN. HIS WIFE AT HIS VIEWING ALLOWED A RUFF DRESSED CHILD TO COME IN TO SAY GOODBY TO ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS. I'LL NEVER FORGET HER WORDS, "YOU MUST BE WENDY HE TOLD ME ALL ABOUT YOU. COME IN. HE WOULD WANT YOU HERE." MR. GIDDENS AND HIS WIFE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN AS LONG AS I HAVE BREATH. WENDY MITCHELL COLLINS

Chief Giddins,
It took 13 more years but your murderer finally got his justice. And one of your other murderers at least never got to to see outside prison walls before he died in 1978. Thank you for your service and sacrifice to the citizens of Ray City.
