Deputy Thompson Campbell was stabbed to death by a prisoner on a train while taking the man to the Central Insane Hospital. As the train pulled into a stop at Chapin, the man suddenly lunged at Deputy Campbell and stabbed him in the eye with a knife he had somehow obtained. A violent struggle ensued in which the suspect continued to stab Deputy Campbell in the back and neck who died a short time later.
As the rest of the passengers in the train car fled, the train's conductor and the Chapan village marshal entered the car from opposite ends. The marshal displayed his badge and the suspect immediately surrendered.
Deputy Campbell had served with the McDonough County Sheriff's Office for three years.
