Policeman James Redmond was shot and killed by a man he had arrested and was taking to jail. Citizens, attracted to the scene by the pistol shot, found the suspect in the act of kicking the officer's dead body. A lynching was narrowly averted as officers arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect.

Policeman Redmond was survived by his wife and three children.
