Reflections for Police Officer Gregory Player Mullinax

We got to know each other fairly well at Marietta, being on the same shift. We were the same age, our wives were the same age, our daughters were the same age. we tried to eat dinner together as much as was possible. Remember us talking the day you left Marietta? Iwas working that terrible night and heard your call. It's been 30 years and it's still in my nightmares. Iknow your memory has helped make me a better person over the years. Thanks for being a good friend during a tough time. If there are police in heaven, I'm sure you're the chief.

This week has been so hard on me and my family but I know you and my dad are up there watching over us and guiding us through this difficult time. My mom and I start back to work tommorrow... It will be the first time in almost 3 weeks we both have been there. It will be hard to get behind phones not knowing what each call holds and not being able to have my dad to ask questions and tell the stories of the day to. Please let my dad know we love and miss him everyday, I know you met him at the gates and gave him the tour just like you did his rookie year at Austell. Keep watching over my mom, she needs you and him right now...

My last reflection is not here for some reason. It was made 2-8.

We lost Greg. Probably the only other person on this earth that still held onto your memory like it was yesterday, as tightly as I do. I find it devastating. But, I know that you are out there somewhere ordering pizzas with anchovies to gross him out and telling stories.

He will be buried tomorrow, and I will be there in your name, as he has always been for me.

Partners again.

28 years and I STILL REMEMBER. I remember the dark, cold night, the crowd, the sudden attack on us. I remember the knives, the scissors, and the gunshots. I still smell the odor of gunpowder in the air. And above all I remember your sacrifice.

Greg,
We never met, but thanks to you I had the best Sgt. a rookie
Yankee could ever have. Sgt Thames took me to the site of the incedent on many occasions and related the incident in detail. Again thank you for all you and your family have given. It is unfortunate that there are other Officers who have had to follow your path. Thanks God for all you brave souls.

Gregory
I can't still can't believe you are gone. In my mind you are still the cutest little teenager running around having a blast. After seeing your daughter and pictures of her little ones at your Mom's funeral, it made me realize again what a sarifice you and your family made. Now you and your Mother can be together at last and in peace.

2008 is almost here. Can it POSSIBLY be 27 years? You have an 11 year old grandson name Kaeleb, and 2 beautiful twins named River and Sebastian. Their Mother was 4 when your end of watch came. Heather is 31 now and you would be SO proud of her. You, Your Mom/Dad, and now my Dad, are watching over us this holiday Season. Merry Christmas, and you are not forgotten "Gerby".....Tasha

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To think that if you didn't lay down your life that night, that four years later I would have never met the man that I am proud to call my dad. I can never and will never be able to thank you enough for that. I would not be the man I am today if it wasn't for you. Your legacy lives on through him. He has never nor will ever let anyone forget the man that he was proud to call his partner. You have always had a special place inside of his heart. Keep an eye on him again for me. I know you have up to this point.

Happy Birthday! The big one!

Grandmother's funeral was lovely. Almost the whole family was there. Everyone kept telling me how much I look like you. Grandmother was laid to rest beside you and they put some of her flowers on your grave. It was nice to see everyone remember you and honor you since you were not there.

Your brothers miss you very much.
