Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Teresa Jean Hawkins

Dearest Teresa, I miss you so much. There are times when the girls look at me that I see you in them. Their gestures, the way they walk, laugh, smile. Especially smile. God is so good to me. Letting me have a little piece of you in my own children. Not a day passes withoutyou in my thoughts. I feel your spirit, and I know that we will be seeing you again soon. I love you.

T.J.,

I miss you more than ever, but I know your spirit is here with all of us. Please keep watching over our friends on the force, and our family & friends elsewhere. Help us become better in our daily struggles to listen to our counselor the Holy Spirit & do what is right. As God depends on us to love each other as he loves us, and there is no greater love than that of the Father, Son ,& Holy Spirit to all of us who have faith, that one day we will be chosen for the house of the Lord our Savior. God bless You, the Blue, & all who stand for justice and right in this world.
Your loving brother, Barry

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Anytime I got off duty and into my own vehicle I forgot to put on my seatbelt. Within in a 1/2 of a mile I would see over my left should in the driver's side mirror an IPD Officer in a patrol unit. It was always over my left shoulder and immediately your memory would remind me to fasten it.

I know you been watching over me since the first day I started my career in law enforcement. I think you rode in the car with me everytime I got into it. I think you were there everytime I went on a warrant, serched a house, served protective detail, made an arrest or worked until midnight writing reports on my cases.

I don't feel you with me anymore now that I'm no longer on the job and I wish you were still there over my left shoulder. But someone else must need you now.

Thank you for taking care of me during my 5 years but its time now for your well deserved rest. There are other heroes on the watch now, and I am safe as well. Go on now TJ, Jon and I and all the ones to come that will follow your path will take care of the family.

Teresa Jean Hawkins was my cousin and I still miss her very much. May the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace.

Ride Along

So you don’t like the ticket I just gave you.
Well, come take a ride with me.
A trip to the scene of an accident.
Where a person now struggles for freedom, and for life.
All because someone was in a hurry, or late for work.

You say you didn’t call me and you don’t need my help.
That this is a family matter and none of my business.
Come take a ride with me.
Where a child now cowers in the nearest corner, or bedroom closet.
They cover their ears and ask god “ please make them stop”.
Still think no one needs my help.

You’ve said all we do is eat donuts and drink coffee.
Come take a ride with me.
On the countless days after taking four calls in an hour.
We think we have time to sit down for dinner.
Only to be call away again.

You think we’re cold and have no heart.
Well, come take a ride with me.
To a place where the pipes now lay to rest.
A brother or sister who gave their life, for someone like you.
A place where tears fall like rain for their family,
For our family, and yes even for you.
Yeah, come take a ride with me.

Teresa was a great friend and fellow classmate, I attended H.S. with her in Tipton. We had our 10 year class reunion just about a month before her untimely death and we all had a great time. She will be missed.
