My condolences and I pray that the strength and blessings of our Lord are received by Chris's family and his extended family at the Waldwick Police Department. Having not known Chris is my loss; but having retired from law enforcement and having served in the Corps, I have lost a brother in arms. The loss of a brother is the hardest thing, as it shows that we cared and that we loved. I know this, Chris cared and he loved this is of what he came from and what he did.

Rest in peace brother; please protect the streets of heaven until we are there to assume our shift.

God is with the Goodell family as are the prayers of everyone in law enforcement and their families. First and foremost, my heart goes out to the Goodell family and his beautiful fiancé. You are all in my thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time.

I am lucky to have had the opportunity in this lifetime to call Chris my friend. He was a truly unique soul and wonderful person, no matter how much time passed between phone calls or run-ins, it was always as if we had just seen eachother. I will always remember his laugh and how he got everyone around him to laugh even more. He loved serving our country. He loved being a Marine and I remember so clearly how excited he was when he got the position of being a police officer in our home town. I haven't lived in Waldwick in years but my parents still do and I always felt a sense of security knowing he was there looking out for our lovely town and my family. This is quite a loss, one I can't even fully comprehend at the moment. It just doesn't seem real.

Thank you for your service, your friendship and all the laughs and memories throughout the years, Chris. You may be gone but you will never be forgotten.

A police officer should be remembered not by how he died, but how he lived! A great man has gone to secure a safe path for the rest of us to follow. Thank you to you, your family and the Waldwick Police Department. Our country is a little less safe without you. Rest in Peace Brother!

IN MEMORY OF POLICE OFFICER CHRISTOPHER GOODELL

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Police Officer Christopher Goodell:

From the beginning of time after Cain killed his brother, Abel, there has been a need for law enforcement officers to protect the weak and to bring evildoers to justice. This work is necessary in a sinful world and is dangerous. In modern times, some four hundred and seventy law enforcement officers have sacrificed their lives to protect the citizens of the State of New Jersey. Today, we honor the sacrifice of Police Officer Christopher Goodell, of the Waldwick, New Jersey Police Department; who was killed in-the-line of duty when his patrol vehicle was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer unit, while parked along the shoulder and running radar on Route 17, in Waldwick, New Jersey, on Thursday, July 17, 2014, and forced into a retaining wall.

Lord God, we are grateful for the life of Police Officer Christopher Goodell. He died serving us. Help us never to forget. Help us celebrate the life of Police Officer Christopher Goodell and honor his sacrifice. Be with the family, friends, and colleagues of this fallen hero. Comfort them and give them your strength. Guide those who seek to take care of the family of this hero. May those empowered to do so, care for them with integrity. In commemorating the death of this hero, help those who mourn to remember that death is not the end. Death does not have the final say, but is simply the transition to the glorious life to come. They should look forward to that life to come with joy and thanksgiving.

As for the citizens of Waldwick, New Jersey, help them to faithfully equip their law enforcement officers with the best tools to protect their community. May their training be adequate to the task. Help the citizens of Waldwick, New Jersey, to remember to pay their law enforcement officers fairly and treat them with respect. Help the citizens of Waldwick, New Jersey, to obey the law and treat each other with dignity so as not to add to the burden of crime and pain to their community.

The time for mourning will soon pass. We have now remembered and celebrated the life lost in this great tragedy. As the family, friends, and colleagues of Police Officer Christopher Goodell go forward, they must celebrate the good things in their lives; and to celebrate life itself!

Finally, Lord God, we pray for the families, friends, and colleagues of all the law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line-of-duty and we thank you for their sacrifices. Bless the lives of their families, friends, and colleagues so they might find healing. Help their law enforcement organizations support the families of these fallen heroes. Even though their deaths might have been senseless, make something good come out of these situations so that their law enforcement organizations and the communities in which they lived and served might be stronger because of their lives and their deaths.

Amen.

Lord God, hear our prayers.

Now, may the Lord bless you, and keep you: the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen.
