Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Dean Francis Miera

Rest in peace brother.

Detective

Deputy Miera,

I could not hold back my tears any longer when I saw your four precious children and your beautiful wife stand around your casket as we waited for the Mass to begin. Without hesitation, your children joined hands over your heart and held on to each other.

This is a testament to your belief in God and the strength of your family.

You are loved by so many and will be forever missed.

God bless you, your family and the men and women of the Bernalillo Sheriff's department. I hope you watch over us down here while you walk your beat in heaven. You are a true warrior. God Speed.......Rest in peace brother.

Officer E. Borghesani

His Judgment Day:
The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep.. Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod. As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"

Big "D",
I still remember always talking to you at the main you always asked how I was doing and how my family was doing. When I started talking about my kids and my wife your eyes would glow like mine because you were thinking about yours too. It has been truly a pleasure to serve in the same department as you. It has also been an honor to call you a friend. I know you will look down on us from time to time so please keep us safe. When you get to where you are going drink one with your new bcso partners Angilique, Jimmy, William, and even old Gilly (he will probably have candy for you instead of beer) Say hello to your neighbor Joe! Vaya con Dios My Brother I will never forget you.

Hey Dean, you will never know how many people you touched. You were a Great family man and it has shown throughout this difficult process. Your co-workers are deeply saddend and will be for a long time. You were always smiling and had a strong handshake for whomever you greeted. Keep heaven safe and someday we'll see you again. Dean,
With your passing it is clear that my life will never be the same. At first I was afraid because I knew the scale of the shoes you leave behind. I understand now that your shoes we never meant to be filled. You have left me with a desire to learn to be a better person. Knowing you and seeing your caring, patient, humble and loving soul, I am touched and inspired to be a better Father, Husband, Brother, Son and overall person. Thank you. You will be forever remembered and LOVED. Rest in Peace my friend.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whose blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I had the honor to be introduced to Dean in 2005 on a hunting trip and it was then I made a lifelong friend. Dean introduced me to new ideas while hunting and fishing that I will carry with me for a lifetime but his friendship never ended there his kindness and concern for his friends and family always amazed me. Dean would always make time to either call or text just to say hi or see how things were going.
