Thanks for your courage to take up law enforcement in which you deal with deadly weapons in the form of 3000lb, 5000lb, 10,000lb, 80,000lb etc. vehicles whizzing by you on a constant basis. It's sad to hear you lost your life to someone that couldn't slow it down during a downpour in the darkness of early morning. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Hope CHP 11-99 Foundation takes care of your family. Thank you for your service.

Officer Joseph Sanders,

Our job as law officers takes us into situations that would horrify many of the populace. But, unlike movies or television, our job also takes us on a daily trip to rather mundane assignments. Just the same they are important. They involve people and the problems they encounter. In the process we also encouter situations and problems. Lurking in the background is danger in many forms. Not all are highly stressful situations such as crazed gunmen or robberies in progress, etc. Sometimes it is just the highway. It has been said that an American highway is a battlefield. It kills and wounds many. Sometimes, as law officers, we are the victims. We work on the battlefield. We therefore place ourselves at constant risk. Our greatest risk is when we are helping others. Our attention is divided. When the worst happens it is a shock. Disbelief. Unacceptance. But yet it is real.

For Officer Joseph Sanders, and his family, it is very real. Suddenly a wife is without a husband. Children are without a father. It is what we face as law officers. It is a constant threat. Such is our lot. We knew it from the day we graduated from the academy. We ignored the thought. Pushed it to the back of our minds. But yet again...it is real.

Officer Joseph Sanders is a hero among heros. Not because he dared to face a gunman. Not because he intercepted a robbery in progress. Simply being on the highway. Helping others having problems. Officer Joseph Sanders was doing his job. The same one we all do every day. The one we know is full of risk, but do anyway. Officer Joseph Sanders is a hero because he was on the battlefield and helping others.

Ron Dicianni said it best: "True heroism is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever the cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever the cost."

I am proud to render to Officer Joseph Sanders a final salute.

Well done, officer,...well done.

Pennsylvania State Police

Our sincere condolences and prayers go out to the family of Officer Sanders. We lost our son, last year on the 19th, and we know how horrible this is, to happen as we approach the Holidays. May the Good Lord watch over and protect you all, as you enter these dark days ahead. God Bless your wife and children. Thank you, sir, for your service and sacrifice. We salute you.
