Deputy Lane -- Your dedication to the good of your community will not be forgotten.

To all those touched by the loss of Deputy Lane -- Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Lane and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Deputy Lane has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Lane, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Deputy Lane is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

For those who pledge to uphold it, Freedom requires a sacrifice the protected will never know.

Deputy Lane (345),
it was truly a pleasure knowing you. I remember meeting you when you first came to the department and talking about our experiences in the Army. I think the thing I remember most about you is your smile and love of the job. The last time we spoke was at prelims on December 7,2007 and you were happy about winning Deputy of the Quarter. You truly deserved it. I pray that you watch over us until we meet again. May God bless you and your family.

The Lord giveth, and the Lord Taketh away. And though we grieve, and we mourn your leaving us here on Earth, we can be reassured that you are in a better place, watching over us here below.

Hey Darral. Well, we laid you to rest today. The whole department was there as well as people from departments from all over the state. I saw all of our old Army buddies from Jackson there, and they were celebrating your life, and the honor of knowing you. I had the distinct pleasure of being right behind the caisson as we marched, and it made me very proud to walk behind you. Brother, if you only knew (which I am sure you do now) how many lives you touched in your life here on Gods great Earth. There was not one dry eye that I could see today. Every person that spoke had nothing but admiration and good things to say about you. By the way brother, you got what you wanted. You were going to the DST. The boss announced that at your service. I thought I was doing ok as far as not breaking down today, but when dispatch called Richland 345, and you did not answer, I lost it. I hope you dont think less of me for that. I just could not contain my tears as they anounced that you were 10-7, 10-42. To have known you was a privilege and a honor. To your family, I can only say that if they ever need anything, I will do my best to help them. Brother, you were an inspiration, and an example to follow. I can only pray that I can be half the Deputy that you were. We have the watch now brother. Rest in Peace. 10-7, 10-42.

My heart hurts for all of you,family,friends,co-workers. Words cannot express the pain that you are feeling. There will be a void left that nothing or no one can ever fill. Just know that you have many folks praying for you during this time. Hearing of Deputy Lane's untimely death brought me back to that very day of hearing of my husbands passing. God be with you.

Deputy Lane, I remember talking to you about working in Richland County when I was a Public Safety Officer for Mental Health. You were very passionate about your duties in law-enforcement and public safety. I was shocked at the turn of invents but I was not surprised that you fought hard to stop crime because you were known as a hard charger. I’m sad that I was not at your side. Thank you for serving the Columbia and Richland County area. You really cared about justice and order. May the Lord have a special place for you soldier. I will pray for your family and fellow deputies.

As one of our esteemed, Deputy Lane came into contact with the K9 Unit on a regular basis. Last Tuesday he shared how much he appreciated what he learned from all of us and how much he enjoyed his job. He bragged on both of his sons and how proud he was that one was going to graduate Saturday. Please know that we are truly grateful of what we have learned from him and are saddened that he has moved up to a far better assignment, but we're all glad he is there. Thank you for your service, you will be missed.

Brother, I never knew you or ever heard your name until this incident. That is what makes all of us better people because we do it not for our name in the headlines but for the honor of helping strangers. In this line of work we never know when the end may come or how it may arise, but you faced it with confidence and bravery. You will never be forgotten and may your family rest easy through the holidays. Until we meet later, Deputy E. Russell.....
