We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Cortez and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Officer Cortez has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends of Officer Cortez, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Officer Cortez is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Rest In Peace Brother. We will take it from here. This just goes to show you how dangerous the job is. Going to investigate a check forgery and you lose your life. As I was once told: Every call you go on is a gun call, we bring the gun. I know you didn't take this as a routine call but it easily could've been taken that way. Always keep your guard up out there. My sincere condolences to your family and fellow officers of the Phoenix PD. GOD Bless You All.

You are to young to have had this happen, but that is one thing we sign up for in the line of duty is "COURAGE". We have the courage to get out and do what most will not, that is apprehend the bad guy.

I just watched my close friend be buried from being struck on his motor and it was one of the toughest things I have done in my 34 years of life. I spent 8 yeard in LE and my father was a OHP troopes for over 25 years, he was shot before I was born and lived his entire career to tell about it.

To the family, don't give up, he died doing what he loved. You have to love the job or otherwise you would not do it. It's either in you or it's not. You will meat again on the other side and he will be there waiting.

God Bless You and your children..
