Family, Friends & Fellow Officers Remember...

Dear Pokorny Family:
You have just joined a tight knit group that no one wants to join... the national family of fallen officers. We humbly thank our Pennsylvania Troopers for their courage to serve and protect. We lost our young officer (Officer Ryan Cappelletty from Erie, PA) as he served in Chesterfield County, VA.

Please know we grieve with you as family. From near and far away those of us who have lost brave young men and women know your grief and stand with you.

Be comforted that God knows our times and God knows that your Joe is one of our heroes. Lean on your police family as they guide you through the days to come. Lean on the Lord to give you strength. Reach out for help when you need it.

Corporal Pokorny is a hero and a brave law enforcement officer who was taken from this earth and from his family by a coward. I thank Joseph Pokorny for his service to his community and the people of Pennsylvania owe him a debt of gratitude for his sacrifice. May he rest easy and may the Lord provide comfort to his wife and children during this difficult time. As someone who has lost a dear friend in the line of duty I know it hurts terribly. Although, geographically many of us are not currently with the family, friends, and "brothers and sisters" of Cpl. Pokorny; many of us across the state and country have been on an emotional roller-coaster, ranging from anger to sadness as we deal with the loss from our ranks. However, I rest a little easier knowing that we will NEVER rest until justice is served. We will not fail!

Feeling rage and sadness I write this reflection. I never spoke with Corporal Pokorny and the closest I have ever been to him was the night of his tragic death. I have slowed several times in a patrol unit while passing him on a traffic stop and always got a friendly smile and "OK" signal. If I told you I wanted to be there when he stopped that car would be a lie, the truth is I would have been there. I along with many policemen wish they could have been with him, hoping for a different ending with good arrest. Cpl.Pokorny once performed a brave action for Patrol Officers, and close friends, from my department and his fellow Troopers. His performance prevented injury to others , only to be injured himself. By all accounts Cpl.Pokorny was a "Top Shelf" Trooper, Supervisor, Friend and Father. I am certain that a long line of police would love to see that friendly smile and "OK" once again. I admire Corporal J.R.Pokorny and the men and women like him. He is a model that all police should copy and attempt to duplicate. Cpl.Pokorny has now joined the ranks of many who have left us tragedy, only to leave us in sadness and rage.

Our Greatest Fear

Yet once again the Thin Blue Line is diminished,
an officer’s final tour of duty is finished.
"Officer down", it’s our greatest fear,
and once again, I hold back a tear.
They patrol in the state, city, county and town,
in uniforms colored white, green, blue and brown.
The shape of their badges may vary,
but it’s a symbol that they all, proudly carry.
They leave for work with a kiss goodbye,
but some don’t come home, no matter how hard they try.
To uphold the law is the job that they pick,
with such high aspirations, why must some die so quick?
They leave behind loved ones, family and friends,
after their lives have met tragic ends.
Some die in crashes, others hearts not too stout,
to many have been lost when gunshots ring out.
Our Heavenly Father has called them home,
no more these dark streets do they roam.
Through trial and error they have given their best,
please Lord, now grant them eternal rest.
Yet once again the Thin Blue Line is diminished,
an officer’s final tour of duty is finished.
