Who You'd Be Today
By Kenny Chesney

Sunny days seem to hurt the most
I wear the pain like a heavy coat
I feel you everywhere I go
I see your smile, I see your face
I hear you laughin' in the rain
Still can't believe you're gone

It ain't fair you died too young
Like a story that had just begun
But death tore the pages all away
God knows how I miss you
All the hell that I've been through
Just knowin' no one could take your place
Sometimes I wonder
Who you'd be today

Would you see the world, would you chase your dreams
Settle down with a family
I wonder what would you'd name your babies
Somedays the sky's so blue
I feel like I can talk to you
And I know it might sound crazy

It ain't fair you died too young
Like a story that had just begun
But death tore the pages all away
God knows how I miss you
All the hell that I've been through
Just knowin' no one could take your place
Sometimes I wonder
Who you'd be today

Sunny days seem to hurt the most
I wear the pain like a heavy coat
The only thing that gives me hope
Is I know
I'll see you again someday
Someday, someday.

This is such a sad day for the Phoenix community. I heard about this the other day on the news when they came on with "Breaking News." I was hoping the young officer would pull through and make it. It is sad to learn that he didn't make it. He fought a good fight, but God had a reason to send him to Heaven. Thank you Officer Salmon for your dedication to the Phoenix community!

To Officer Salmon's family, friends, fiancee, and co-workers:
My thoughts are with all of you and I hope that you remember that during this long journey, you remember that you have so many people thinking of you and praying for you.

While in the academy with Paul, our class sergeant made it a point to have us read aloud all the E.O.W. information for officers to help us realize what a difficult field we were choosing to move into. They always seemed to be distant people, working in some other department, in some other state. Then a Phoenix police officer, David Uribe, died while we were in the academy and it hit a lot closer to home, but still not enough to make us think any one of us would be killed in the line of duty. Especially out of the academy, you feel like you are invincible, until something like this happens.

Paul was a great leader, a great person, a great friend. More than once he helped me conquer challenges I faced in the academy, and he was always willing to help others out. That’s why he wanted to be a police officer, to help others who were in need. And even if he didn’t think he could help them, he could make them laugh, and help ease the pain or frustrations.

Paul, your legacy will not be forgotten. You wanted to make other's lives better by sacrificing your time, your energy, and finally your life. The people of Phoenix, and of the entire state, appreciate what you have done and what you stood for.

We were just beginning to plan our one-year reunion and everyone wanted to catch up, but this wasn't the way we were hoping to come back together. May peace be with you, Paul.

No words can express the sadness we feel today. The emotions from the last two years come flooding back. To get the call, to see the news that we have another injured officer, was something that we prayed wouldn't happen. We have to believe that God has a reason for calling Paul home. He will be in good hands in heaven, no doubt, as he was here on earth. To Paul's family, friends and espeically 42K, my heart goes out to you. Cherish the memories you have and continue to live the life he would want you to live. We will be here to honor Paul and support you. I believe Commander Humphrey said it best..."We are a large department, but right now, we are very small"

He will watch over you from heaven.

God Bless

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

Paul, thank you so much for your sacrifice in the pursuit of your dream. You are the same age as me and my heart aches at the thought of your life cut short so soon. You are now part of a very elite club up in Heaven and I'm SURE you guys get great parties at Christmas time :-)

To Paul's fiance, I hope someone leads you to this site one day and you see all the people across this nation that mourn with you and will ALWAYS remember him with you...and always be there if you need anything. I'm sorry Paul can only be with you in Spirit this Holiday Season, but you will never be alone.

To Paul's family, friends, fiance and co-workers... May God Bless you and keep you. May He now carry you when you simply cannot walk on your own. May He hold your hand a little tighter and allow others around you to let you grieve and heal fully while keeping Paul's memory alive.

Be safe, everyone.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

Brother Salmon,

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Respectfully,
You’re Brothers in Blue

We are so sorry to here about your tragic loss of a loved one in law enforcement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you in support. As we personally know, sometimes there is little comfort that comes from words. Keep focused as you can on the memories and joyous times for these things may bring you comfort. Rely heavily on family, friends, and other law enforcement. Honor your fallen loved one, for their sacrifice will not be forgotten.
