Reflections for Sergeant Denny F. Gallaway, Jr.

Just thinking about you and wanted to say miss you.

Hey Bo,
I was just thinking about you again, as I do quite often. I was going through the motions of the day, walking around with a grin on my face. A friend asked me what I was smiling about, and I did not know that I was. Then I realized that it was because I was thinking of you, and it made perfect sense. At least to me. You just always had the ability to do that. I was just thinking of the laughs, the smiles, the jokes, the good hearted conversation that we shared through the years, and I am thankful to have known you and feel blessed for ever that you were my friend. I just wanted to say thank you for that.
Miss you much, my friend.

I got to thinking about you the other day and I started laughing. Due to the particular reason (which I will not mention) I was thinking "what would Boe do ?" in this situation.

I could hear the little "evil" giggle thing you used to do.

Anyway, your on my mind so I thought I'd holla.

To the family and friends of Sergeant Denny Gallaway and to his fellow officers:

On the third anniversary of the day Denny so tragically lost his life, we are remembering and honoring his courage and his memory. His heroism, valor and bravery will be forever remembered.

May you be continue to be comforted by the support and caring of your law enforcement family, and other police survivors. We grieve for you and with you. Our family lost our beloved Larry Lasater when he was fatally shot in April of 2005 so we know the anquish you are still experiencing.

To Denny's family, please know that Denny's memory will be forever revered.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the years of service Sgt. Gallaway gave to his community and the citizens of Texas, and the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 15, 2005.

On the 3rd anniversary of Sergeant Gallaway’s death, we honored his service during roll call by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job.

Sergeant Gallaway may be gone, but is not forgotten.

Well, Boe, he did it to me. Just what you said he would do, the way that you said he would do it. I feel shattered, again. And I wish you were hear to give that look, to tell me I told you so as only a real friend could, and encourage as only a real friend would. I was just thinking today about one of our last conversations about him, and I find comfort in that memory. So that's what I am going with, as right now there just doesn't seem much else. I miss you, but I know you are just above, watching out for both of us. For that I am thankful.

I met your mom at Wal-mart today. She seems like such a strong woman with a big heart. What started off as one stranger asking another a question, led to us talking about me being an officer just like her son. As she was telling me about you I felt sad, thinking about what your family has had to go through. She said you were always brave and wanted to help people no matter what the consequences. I believe meeting your mother today was no accident, it happened for a reason. She walked away with knowing her son is still watching over things and I walked away with a new inspiration. I didn't know you, but through the heartfelt words your mother spoke today, I feel like I do now. You are truly inspiring. God Bless your family and friends!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Well, I got the ACE Team started back up.......I still cant do it like you, but I'm trying to carry out what you began here.
Bill and his boys hold dual commisions and reserve with our department to assisst with all of the high risk stuff.
I was training some guys the other day on bulding entries and I couldn't help but think back to when you started the SRT.
Boy...I almost screwed that up for everybody....."wha happen ??"
That hole was a little bigger than you thought :)
Anyway, we been knocking down some local dope and running the team to serve the warrants.
You know that everything goes into the newspaper around here, so I made sure that they started printing ACE Team in there.
I hope it carries on.
Anyway......still miss you and wish you were here to call.
