It saddens me that the person or persons who committed this violent act were not as brave as you were to face you in this cowardly act. The citizens of Missouri will not forget your bravery, courage and the ultimate sacrifice you made for this great state. 10-42 and rest in peace.

My fiancé, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis was a Deputy Sheriff with the Davis County Sheriff's Office in southeast Iowa. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Carl did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Carl be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Sergeant Graham's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you. If you ever need anything please do not hesistate to contact me. Dennis' department (the Davis County Sheriff's Office) will always know how to reach me.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Carl is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Carl was well respected and well loved. You were blessed to have had him in your life, even for a short time.

Thank you Sergeant Graham for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please say "hello" to my fiancé Dennis for me.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

My dear friend Dewayne,
Words can not express how I feel at this moment. Right now, I am ashamed to belong to a society that would kill such a fine man. I will not rest until the person(s) that did this are brought to justice and pay their debt. To your family, know that I did my best to ease their pain on the day we all said good bye. They will forever be taken care of and considered patrol family. I under stand that you and Cathy were not offically married yet, but I assure you that she will be taken care of as well. I told her and her daughter that they were part of our family as well and that we loved them. Rest easy my friend for your death was not in vein. In closing just let me say that I have always taken great pride when I put on my uniform, but I will have even more pride knowing that you shed your blood on that same uniform. I only wish that I could be half the Trooper that you were. God Bless you my friend.

I'm so sorry to hear of your tragic loss. It is so similar to the way I lost my father, ambushed in his own driveway. Daddy always said when you're home, you can't go any farther. Just know that he is safe now in Heaven, and Daddy was there to usher him through the gates!
God bless you all, and Sgt. Graham, rest in peace.
