I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).
Unfortunately, I had to add the name of another friend. Deputy Jeffrey Hewitt, Buncombe County (NC) Sheriff’s Department, E.O.W. April 4, 2004.

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

...Gone, but never Forgotten....

Duke,
You will be missed by one and all at the Bay Bridge and through out our Department. Not seeing you in the morning will leave a void there. I know you are watching over all of us now. Thank you for your friendship and rest in peace, my friend.

Duke, although I wish I could have gotten to know you better, I know that your colleagues hold you high. My prayers are with your young wife, parents, and an extended family that did not have to lose you so quickly. God Bless you and comfort your loved ones.

I remember Duke as a new hire (cadet), I was the first intern at MDTA. We were assigned to the truck safety division. Duke was a quiet young man, with a hard working attitude. I have ran into him over the years, as I was originally a Balto. Co. Officer. I was not supprised to learn of his many awards, and accomplishments. I feel blessed to have known Duke. It was hard to pass by his home last night on patrol, and see a marked unit on guard...however I was proud to see the care for his family. Duke will be missed by many, and remembered as a true brother in Blue.. John Schmidt 1176

Shane, you said it all. Although I did not know him well, I was familiar with him. Great guy and a wonderful police officer. We took a big hit on our department yesterday, but we must move on for him. We will always remember Duke and he will forever be in my heart and prayers. My prayers also go out to his friends and family. GOOD-BYE BROTHER, WE WILL MISS YOU!
