Reflections for Officer Anthony Lee Mims

To the family, friends and co-workers of Officer Mims:

I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I pray that God gives you comfort and strength in the weeks and months ahead.

I know the loss you are feeling and that there are no words that will make this pain any less. I lost my dad, Ptl. William B. Bell, on 11-19-02. He died in service to his community at the hands of a repeat offender who tried to use his "disability" as an excuse for his actions, and so I know the pain that such a senseless crime can cause.

You will find that this law enforcement family is like no other. You will receive such love and support, and it will help carry you through this. When my dad died, the love and support from my dad's co-workers and friends and from our community was overwhelming. I never realized how much the LIFE of my father affected so many people than his death did. It was truly beautiful to see that his life and his service did not go unappreciated or unnoticed. And you'll find that your loved one will have made a similar impact on the lives of SO many people. The love that you shared with him and the service he gave to his community will be of great comfort and pride.

Again, I am sorry for your loss. You are all in my prayers.

I will always remember Tony for a number of things. Tony was a family man- i remember the last time I worked with him a week or two ago- he asked if he would mind if he could go spend some time alone to have lunch at Dairy Queen with his wife on his break. The kind spirit he had, his laugh and the smile that was always on his face, the way he took the time to explain things to you in a way that made you feel comfortable, the way you could approach him with any question you had, his cheerful personality, and most of all--a great Officer and a Hero I count it a priviledge to have known and have trained under. We dont always understand why God allows things like this to happen, but I do know that God is always in control and that he has a special place in heaven reserved for people like Tony and Larry. You will never be forgotten....

RIP -

THE POLICEMAN'S LAST ROLL CALL ...

THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE
HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD
NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER
CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a Saint. I've had to
work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been
violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that
wasn't mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just
got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with
fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept many unmanly tears. I know I
don't deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around
except to calm their fear. If you've a place for me Lord, it needn't be so
grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As
the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward
now, policeman, you've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's
streets, you've done your time in hell."
