Reflections for Sergeant Jason "Tye" Pratt

To the family of Officer Pratt:

I am truly sorry for the lost that you have suffered. I lost someone special on EOW 8-2-03. May you find some comfort knowing that you are not alone during this time. To the Department, may you use Officer Pratt's memory to help keep you going. May God keep all of you in his hands.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Jason did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Jason be the be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Pratt's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all, especially to his wife. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Jason is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Jason was well respected and well loved.

Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

To the family, friends, and co-workers of Jason...You are in our thoughts and prayers. I had hoped to to never attend a duty-related funeral for anyone that I knew personally. Attending a duty-related funeral for any brother or sister officer is heart wrenching for me. But to personally know the person...it is harder than I imagined. I attended two seperate SWAT schools with Jason and, although we didn't hang out together off-duty, he still made an impression on me and I very much enjoyed my conversations with him. His humor was awsome, as was his tactics and work ethic! I had hoped to work more with him in the future.

I know that the fine men and women of the Omaha Police Department will always be there for his wife and two beautiful daughters. I also know that Jason is aware of this. I know that he is at peace. We will all miss him.

Rest well my brother. We will all be on watch together again sometime.

May God bless us all.

I never knew you,
But we are brothers,
I never met you,
But we are brothers,
Our paths never crossed,
But we are brothers,
I have never patrolled in your town,
But I know we have been on duty together,
I just in another town.
And we are brothers.
And as a brother,
I feel the pain,
I feel the hurt,
And I feel the sadness that only a brother can undergo.
The sacrifices that each of us make everyday in nothing compared to the one you and your fellow officer have accepted.
One that everyone one of us is aware could happen
Any day, any moment, any second.
You have made me proud,
You have made my job easier because
I am more aware.
I am more cautious
And I will never forget you.
May God hold you in his hand and have you rest in peace.

To Officer Jason Pratt family, this is truly a tragic moment for you and the citizens of this great nation. I can assure you that even though we are hundreds of miles away, we join you in your sorrow and pain. A hero is not defined as one who can slam dunk a basketball, throw touchdowns or even one who can putt a golf ball. A true hero is one who swears to protect the citizens of his state and willing to lay down his life. He is a police officer. He walks the "thin blue line" separating decency from scum of this earth. Officer Pratt, you have paid the ultimate price. You have made your wife and little girls proud. Please be assured that your brothers and sisters in blue will take care of your family. God bless you, your family, the men and women of the Omaha Police Department and the people of Nebraska.

To the family of Officer Pratt,

I know your pain is great right now and nothing seems to make sense. You may never understand why this senseless tragedy happened but you must stay strong in your faith. God doesn't make mistakes. Each day will get better even if it's just a minute amount. May God bless you and watch over you.

It scares me a little more everytime I visit this site and see how many brothers and sisters in blue have fallen in the line of duty. This unfortunate story brings it home a little more than the rest. As I read this story, not only do I feel my fallen brother but also for his family. I cant' begin to imagine, raising my boys without their mother and then I see his kids are the same age as my own. All the more reason that we all should be greatful for as we safely end out shift and return home to our families. Rest easy brother in the knowledge that all of your brothers and sisters now have your watch, not only on the streets but also with your family. Your family already has the knowledge that you will forever be watching over them and guiding them safely through their days. Now they will also know that your family in blue will also watch over them.

Godspeed and rest easy sir, we'll take it from here

To the Pratt Family,

We at the MPD pray every day that no names are added to this site, unfortunately it is in vein. I know it seems as if you were robbed of the one you love but be glad for the time you had with him and supporting his purpose. For Jason I say " rest in peace my brother and help us not lose sight of our mission for all that is decent and just ".

Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Thank you Officer Pratt for a job well done. Please continue to watch over us and protect us as only you can. You will forever be at our side and in our hearts.

For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.

There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

Any officer who gives his or her life in the line of duty should be remebered as nothing short of a true hero. It's important that we never forget our brothers and sisters and their sacrifices. Jason Pratt will be missed, but never forgotten. To qoute another well respected officer, he was "the best of the best."
