The Badge

It is polished and shiny and looks so fine.
Once you earn it you have to tow the line.
The minute you wear it upon your chest
it becomes a symbol that you are the best.
It means honesty, integrity, and fairness to all.
Your life is never your own, but at the publics call.
Night or day, any hour, it makes you a mark.
It doesn't protect you from a shot in the dark.
Over the years the shine starts to fade,
but brighter still is the man its made.
It is often what seperates you from the crowd.
It is a second family of which you are proud.
So now comes your time, you can't be denied.
When you pin on your badge, wear it with pride
The minute you wear it upon your chest
it becomes a symbol that you are the best.

I am a U.K.Citizen who has been a long time supporter of the CHP and have a retired officer as a real friend.
I have been afforded every courtesy on my visits to the Academy and I feel your loss as a family and the CHP loss as the second family.
I will pray for you and think of the heartache you are going through.
May God bless you and help you through your darkest hours.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. Dennis died doing a job he loved, just as I'm sure Shannon did. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Shannon be the be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Distel's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. No one can truly understand the pain of our loss until they've walked in our shoes. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Shannon is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Shannon was well respected and well loved.

Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

I AM WRITING FOR OUR ENTIRE CHAT ROOM FOR THE SUPPORT OUR OFFICERS WOLFPACK FAMILY.
WE SEND OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHIES TO ALL FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF OFFICER DISTEL. WE ALWAYS TELL EVERYONE THAT COMES INTO OUR ROOM OR OUR MEMBERS TO ALWAYS GO UP TO A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER OR ANYONE THAT PUTS THEIR LIVES 24/7 AND SHAKE THEIR HAND AND TELL THEM HOW WE FEEL ABOUT WHAT THEY DO AND TO THANK THEM FOR KEEPING US SAFE SO WE CAN LAY OUR HEADS DOWN AT NIGHT AND SLEEP WITH PEACEFULLY. WE ARE ALL PROUD OF OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN BLUE AND THANK GOD WE HAVE THEM EVERY DAY BECAUSE WE KNOW THEY WALK WITH DEATH EVERYDAY, BUT WE PRAY THAT OUR PRAYERS ARE CALLING ALL ANGELS TO WALK WITH THEM DURING THEIR TOUR.

Watching my love put on his uniform,
I catch the glint off the badge which adorns.
Checking his gun, adjusting his belt,
Anguish begins to build like the other nights I've felt.

I know his job is to protect and to serve,
And my mind knows good men are what the force deserves.
But selfishness enters with matters of the heart and so why him?
To put his life on the line for so many unappreciative women and men.

But that one difference is all he wants to make,
From easing some abuse to giving a lucky motorist a break.
So when his hand reaches for the door to begin his night,
Only God knows what will be his plight.

I can only hope he knows of all my love,
And in another breath say a prayer to God above.
Keep him safe as well as his other fellow brothers,
May they all return to their wives, husbands, and mothers.

But in the night I know a siren will wail,
For the call of duty will always prevail.
Injustice seems to need no rest or sleep,
But instead constantly lurks in the shadows deep.

Nothing matches the feeling at the end of his work day,
When he reaches out to touch me in the bed where I lay.
Peace reaches my soul and I thank God again
For bringing my love safely back to me, our family, and friends.

GOD BLESS OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN BLUE

This is a very sad time for such a young officer to lose his life so that the streets could be safer. Thank you for your dedication. You will never be forgotten. Even though this is a very sad time for his family, friends, and fellow officers, rest assure that they will carry on this fine young officers legacy. God bless you. You are now at peace, and may god comfort his family, friends, and fellow officers. A hero will never be forgotten.
