Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Patrick Martin Maher

Pat,

Memories of you pass through me without notice, without warning. It could be the flash of a red mustang, the scent of coffee, or the silence of dawn. I miss you and I am forever proud of you.

On your five year anniversary, I'm going to grab every cop I can find and head up to 272/Pacific HY S. Listen for our sirens as we pay tribute to you. We may wake up or startle some neighbors in the area, but surely it will put a smile on your face.

A Hui Hou!

It is so hard to believe that 4 years ago, we all were in DC to honor you. Time has gone by quickly, but there is always a void in our lives. This week we honor you and all of Law Enforcement who gave it all for the job. Please watch over Jim and Mary as they continue to do what you loved doing. Miss you.

Well the National Memorial is next week. I am so sorry I can not attend this year. I hate that you will not have one of us their standing by your place on the Wall. But trust that my friends that are able to attend will be by your side. So many more heroes to honor. Keep looking over all of us.

Love ya

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

As our hearts are heavy i believe we all kmow that things will continue to be ok on this road we now walk.

On the 04th anniversary of your tragic murder, I salute you, sir. I doubt if time has made it any easier on your family and friends. However, I hope everyone will take comfort in knowing that you will NEVER be forgotten and will FOREVER be a hero!

Hello Pat;

On this day we remember you. Your jokes, your smarty attitude :) and your laughter. God puts us on this earth to accomplished a certain amount of things. I can not think of anything that you did not accomplish. You had 2 amazing careers and were a great husband, father and grandfather. The only thing that you didn't get to do was grow old with your family. There is not a day that goes by that we do not think of you. Life has slowly returned to somewhat normal. We have learned to forgive what has happened, but we will NEVER forget.

My thoughts are with your loved ones on this 4th anniversary of your EOW. I know the terrible grief your wife endures every day, not only for you but also for her son. I know she will have many questions when she finally meets our Maker to explain why. Continue to watch over her and protect her from harm. Let her feel your presence so she knows you are near her and watching over her. You are a true hero and will never be forgotten.

Hey Pat,

Hard to believe that four years have come and gone. You are still held close and not forgotten. Was thinking of you when I wrote this:

from birth
etched so long ago
in the sanctuary of life formation
in-spirited with conviction
a whispering voice
announcing
in the line of duty

living in
the
in-between
where lifes
harshness
meets
lifes
beauty
a sentry over
those
choosing
desperation
dispassion
and
other
less-nesses
of death living

attempting
advocating
LIFE living
in-spirited with
the etching of conviction
to serve and protect
in the line of duty

consciously choosing
selfless acts of courage
peace
justice
risking everything
law
harmony
the conviction
etched so long ago
made firm
in the line of duty

chancing
someday
the radio call
three times beaconing
now out of service
in the line of duty

As I sat at the Candelight Vigil at the National Law Enforcement Memorial my mind wandered far away to the days of all of us swimming in Emmas pool, making forts in all of our bedrooms, playing in the barn and jumping off the haystack, walking to the mountains, all of the barbeques, all of the weddings, all of the gameboard nights, all of life. I only wish we had more time.

I hope everyone that reads your site can get such a great picture of not only the brave warrior but of the man, himself. But then every family member of every brave soul listed on these pages wants that too.

I placed a letter for all to read at the memorial of how a family can be broken but start to heal. I know you will bring Logan into your watchful embrace.

Hugs and kisses to all of our family that is with you.

Pat,

Another grandchild was born this week. Another I think you would have enjoyed being with and spoiling. I remember how you were with Ryan. The two of you were rather inseperable. Watch over Logan, Mandy and Mark.

January 21, 2007

Merry Christmas Pat. Another holiday that you are not with us. I found this poem that I think is very fitting not just to you, but to Mom and Dad and all the relatives that are in heaven with you.

I see the countless Christmas trees
around the world below
With tiny lights, like Heaven's stars,
reflecting on the snow

The sight is so spectacular,
please wipe away the tear
For I am spending Christmas with
Jesus Christ this year.

I hear the many Christmas songs
that people hold so dear
But the sounds of music can't compare
with the Christmas choir up here.

I have no words to tell you,
the joy their voices bring,
For it is beyond description,
to hear the angels sing.

I know how much you miss me,
I see the pain inside your heart.
But I am not so far away,
We really aren't apart.

So be happy for me, dear ones,
You know I hold you dear.
And be glad I'm spending Christmas
with Jesus Christ this year.

I sent you each a special gift,
from my heavenly home above.
I sent you each a memory
of my undying love.

After all, love is a gift more precious
than pure gold.
It was always most important
in the stories Jesus told.

Please love and keep each other,
as my Father said to do.
For I can't count the blessing or love
he has for each of you.

So have a Merry Christmas and
wipe away that tear.
Remember, I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

Miss you my brother
Love, Peggy

Pat not a day goes by that I don't think about you or that smile.Sometimes I find myself thinking what would Pat do. As you probably already know another of HPD's Finest was taken today. I hope that he as found you in heaven but you have probably already found him. It makes me feel a little bit better to know that you you will help him in his transition. Please let him know that his family will be well taken care of and that he will never be forgotten just as you have never been forgotten by HPD's Finest. After I heard the news, I went to the nearest church and prayed with the Pastor. As the Pastor and I spoke, I thought of your smile and I thought of Steve's smile. I mentioned to the Pastor that you both had the same smile and cheery disposition. Both willing to help without any question. God sure has a great Police force in Heaven. I keep thinking that someday this will get easier but it doesn't. Tonight my heart is heavy as I think of you and Steve. Aloha dear brother in blue.
