I want to just say Hello to everyone and also to say I'm sorry. Louis and I never knew about this site and I just so happened to come across it by googling Gerards name on my computer.....We never knew that all these nice words were being written and how beautifully written they are. We want to Thank everyone for remembering him and/or even saying kind words!! It is a pleasure to see how much and how many people really remembered and loved him!! If you would like to keep track of my Family and what is going on in our lives. I have a remembrance page in Honor of Gerard on Facebook. the page is under "in Memory of Police Officer Gerard Carter"
Thank you all for the love, all of you with the memories have pinpointed everything about him! His son Louis is a splitting image of his father. He inherited his looks, sense of humor, laugh, smile and mannerisms!! I am once again living with the best man known to man....and Gerard is living through Louis!! God bless you all and to all Officers, please stay safe and wear your vests!!!

I read an article recalling the 10th year anniversary of your death. There were pictures of your wife and son. It's amazing how much he's grown and looks like you. Your wife is just as gracious as ever. In the article your love of playing video games was mentioned. It reminded me of when you used to play them in the record room on meal. Hope you're playing a few games of Madden Football up there.......

Hey Gerry, just wanted you to know that we haven't forgotten you. It is coming up to the anniversary of the day you moved on to a better place. I can't believe it has been 10 years. I still remember getting on the ferry before going to John Jay and asking the cops posted at the SI Ferry terminal about your condition. Time flys. Rest peacefully Gerry, You will never be forgotten...

Gerry, I hope you are resting peacefully in heaven. Every day that I drove down to the ferry on the way to the Academy I looked towards Broadway and thought of your sensless murder. When I was promoted and assigned to the SIHU I thought of you and your sacrifice. And as I passed your memorial on the way in those doors I said a quite prayer. Even though the SIHU is no more, your memorial still stands to ensure that you will live forever in the hearts and minds of everyone. The NYPD mourns your loss and will never forget. RIP Officer Carter.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Gerry,
I remember sharing the same foot post with you in Park Hill. You and your partners in Housing were always gratious to myself and all the rookies from the 120 who had that post. You all invited us into the record room on cold nights to watch some T.V. between jobs. We ordered food together, ate together, and had some laughs together. When it was time to go to a heavy job we had your back, and you had ours.
Now, 9 years later, I see your son from time to time. He has grown into a fine young man. He's very respectful, smart and energetic. He's a mirror image of you, however, you know that already because I'm sure you watch over him every day.
Continue to rest in peace. We'll keep manning the fort down here.

To the family and loved ones of Officer Gerard Carter and his fellow officers with the New York City Police Department:

On this the eighth anniversary week of Gerry's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Gerry, I feel as if I know him through the loving reflections left by friends. His valor and courage will never be forgotten.

I am so sorry that Gerry was robbed of his life at such a young age, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Gerry gave to his community and the citizens of New York, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on July 31, 1998.

~~~Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep~~~
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn’s rain
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds circled in flight
I am the soft star that shines at night
I am the flowers that bloom by day
I am the fragrance of new mown hay
I am each blade of grass that grows
I am the rush of melting snow
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there, I did not die…..
I remember Gerard everyday and I miss him very much. I still remember his laugh and his smile and the way he always cared. I only wish that he was still here. Two years have gone by and still it feels like only yesterday that we lost such a wonderful person. He was always a good friend to me and for this I will always love him. May God keep you safe and happy, and one day I will see you again. Love always your friend, Nirvana Q.
