"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Thank you for living your life called to serve others. Many people are alive today because of you. I will never forget your ultimate sacrifice. I am friends with a few of the officers and medics/firefighters that responded to your last call. You have left a lasting positive impression on this world.

Rest in Peace, Officer Seely. Your sacrifice is not forgotten.

The words "Legacy" and "Hero" are thrown around so much today that their true meaning is often forgotten.

When I think of those words, I remember Officer Seely. I met him on a ride along in the early 90's and the impression that he made upon me sparked my interest in Law Enforcement.
Officer Seely was the most gracious and friendly Officer I have ever met. I had the honor of seeing and talking to Officer Seely several more times before he was tragically taken away. He was an incredibly hard worker and no matter what the circumstances, he was always friendly.

I am a Law Enforcement Officer today in a very large part due to my brief encounters with Officer Seely, I can thank him for showing me the proper way to act with the public, to work hard for my own reasons, not the brass or command staff.

Not a month has gone by since I became a cop that I don't think about the type of Officer that he was. When I deal with people I always think of the fact that this one Officer made such an impression in my life that he had the ability to change it, although I didn't know it at the time, he left an impression on me that changed me for the better and I will always be grateful.

To Senior Patrol Officer Dan Seely, his family and friends, and his fellow officers:

On this the ninth anniversary of your brutal murder, please know that your valor and bravery are remembered.
What a horrific incident that tragically took your life and the lives of two innocent children.

My son too left an expectant wife when he was fatally shot during a foot pursuit on April 23, 2005. I hope that God has held your family in his arms, and that they have continued to be supported by their law enforcement family, and other police survivors.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the many years of distinquished service to your community and the citizens of Alaska, and the supreme sacrifice you and your family made on October 26, 1996.

I met Ofc. Seely when I was stationed at Elmendorf AFB as a Security Policeman. I was saddened to see that he had been killed in the line of duty. My prayers are with his friends and family.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

I've been a cop for over 20 years, and Dan Seely is without a doubt the hardest working cop I've known. Intelligent, dedicated, and a work ethic few could match. He was a friend and a hero. I know two things for sure. There is a heaven, and Dan is there. God Bless and Keep you Dan R. Seely.

I first met Dan when we started the APD Reserve Academy on April 2nd, 1985. We went on to join as regulars the following year. Dan was always on the ball. He was always there to lend a hand, regardless of how hard or disgusting the task. He had a self inmposed standard of making 50 arrests a month. If he didn't quite reach his goal by the
end of his shift each month he would stay on duty on his own time. We used to give him our arrests the last night of the month so he wouldn't get caught short. I was handling a non-injury accident at King street and 92nd avenue when I
was told of Dan's murder. I thanked the officer and went back to work, because that was what Dan would have done. The crying can come
